Deciding who starts in goal this season looks like it’ll be Neil Lennon’s first major decision to make.

Scott Bain was Celtic’s undisputed number one last season and impressed as he kept Craig Gordon out of the side on the way to winning another treble.

Now there are question marks surrounding who will start between the sticks this time around. This comes after Davie Hay backed Gordon to make a return to the starting XI.

Writing for the Evening Times, he explained why he thinks Gordon may be favoured.

Lenny will go with whoever he believes is going to make the most saves and take the most crosses. I believe that’s going to be Gordon.

Dropping Bain as Celtic’s number one would be an incredibly harsh decision, but one that will define a change in system at Parkhead.

Lennon, who has a history of favouring experienced pros, has never shied away from the fact he wants to adopt a more direct and ruthless style of play compared to the neat and tidy progressive football that was implemented under Brendan Rodgers.

Since joining permanently, Bain has been a real surprise package for both club and country at a time when his career appeared to be at a crossroads only months before.

An impressive 22 clean sheets across all competitions last season represent a strong outing from Bain, but he now faces the toughest spell in his short Celtic career, with his place in the team on the line.

Who would you like to be Celtic's number one going forward?

Scott Bain

Craig Gordon

It seems that even at this stage, Lennon himself is not sure. He had a good look at both players during pre-season, rotating between the sticks throughout the Champions League qualifiers.

This could be a developing situation that continues into the domestic season, but dropping Bain for Gordon would be a telling move about how Lennon will be looking to take the club forward.
