Celtic need to strengthen at right-back says McNamara – does he have a point?

Jackie McNamara believes Celtic need to sign another right-back before the end of the summer transfer window, despite the Hoops already bringing in Hatem Adb Elhamed, but does he have a point?

According to Football Insider, McNamara revealed he is unsure as to whether Elhamed is a natural right-back and therefore Lennon should still strengthen in that department to offer cover and competition.

There’s obviously the right-back position that needs strengthening. They’ve signed the lad in for there in Elhamed but I don’t know if that’s his natural position, right-back or centre-half. You could do with another one there to make it two right-backs.

McNamara does have a point. Elhamed’s more natural position appears to be at centre-back despite him making such a positive impact on his debut playing at right-back against St Johnstone.

According to Transfermarkt, of Elhamed’s 27 appearances for Hapoel Beer Shiva last season, he played as a central defender 20 times while offering cover at right and left-back.

Therefore it would appear to be a wise decision for Lennon to bring in another option at right-back, not only to strengthen that position, but also to allow the Hoops boss to deploy Elhamed as a centre-back should he need to.
