Neil Lennon’s decision to play Callum McGregor at left-back against CFR Cluj was baffling, as the Hoops crashed out of the Champions League on Tuesday.

On a disastrous night for Lennon’s men, a 4-3 defeat to the Romanian side at Parkhead saw their European elimination secured, as they lost 5-4 on aggregate.

To bow out before the group stage even gets underway is a crushing blow, with Europa League football now on the horizon for Celtic.

Lennon choosing to play McGregor in a rare left-back role did not go down well with supporters, who took to Twitter to vent their fury after the game.

Managers live and die by the sword when it comes to their decision-making and Lennon has to accept he made an error with his use of McGregor.

Not only was he taking one of Celtic’s best players out of his preferred midfield role, he was also using him in a far more unfamiliar position.

All it did was highlight the absence of Kieran Tierney, following his move to Arsenal, and display a lack of faith in new signing Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.
