Davie Hay believes Fraser Forster is on a “different level” to both Craig Gordon and Scott Bain, and the shot-stopper could certainly be a key man for Celtic this season.

In a piece for the Evening Times on Celtic’s Glasgow Derby triumph, Hay praised both Gordon and Forster, but suggested the latter is ahead of the former in the pecking order in terms of quality.

On the day, the new recruits may just have shown they have what it takes to play for Celtic after all. In the case of Fraser Forster of course, that was no surprise. He may not have had a lot to do at Ibrox, but his presence is something that will settle the Celtic backline down. I am a fan of Craig Gordon, but I think that Forster is currently at a different level and he will add quality between the sticks.

While Gordon is no doubt a good goalkeeper, Hay’s point is spot on and Forster’s return to Parkhead could prove to be crucial for Celtic this season.

The 31-year-old has produced on the big occasion for the Hoops before, and will no doubt be called upon throughout the campaign as Celtic go in search of a fourth consecutive treble and success in Europe.

Bain had looked shaky prior to Forster’s arrival and Lennon clearly saw an issue in the keeping department. Re-signing the Southampton man therefore could turn out to be a vital piece of business at the end of the season.
