Why Celtic shouldn’t bring Phil Foden in on loan

John Hartson has recently tipped Phil Foden to join Celtic on loan and believes Celtic should go all out for the player. However, he is not actually needed at Celtic Park and the side should be looking to improve the players they already have.

Foden is highly regarded under Pep Guardiola, being given a few first-team chances now and looks to be on the verge of breaking fully into the starting 11 of the English champions.

He is a fantastically talented playmaker who has the ability to find a pass out of nowhere, take on opponents and have a crack at goal. There is no doubt that he would excel in Glasgow and be a real handful for oppositions, domestically and in Europe as well.

Celtic shouldn’t take Hartson’s thoughts on board though, because there are plenty of talented options in midfield already for the Hoops.

This season, Ryan Christie has proved he is one of the best midfielders in Scotland, despite his red against Livingston, alongside teammates; Callum McGregor and Scott Brown. The trio have shown to be a class act in controlling the middle of the pitch and have made it extremely difficult for anyone to come and take their spots.

Celtic also have Olivier Ntcham, who is proving his doubters wrong and is putting in some remarkable performances which has brought him in contention for the starting spot.

Tom Rogic has also returned from injury, but it is severely struggling to take his number 10 role back, with Christie in such great form.

This is a fantastic group of five to start with, possibly the best options in midfield we have had in years. However, this doesn’t include the younger players we have coming through as well.

Summer signing, Luca Connell has yet to have made an appearance for the club, even though he has been putting a string of great performances in for the youth and reserve squad already since joining.

Scott Robertson, Barry Coffey and Koussi Eboue have all yet to make an appearance this season – simply due to the fact there is no one you can drop from the side.

That means outside the three starters, Celtic have two brilliant mainstays who could slot in at any time as well as four youngsters who are willing to prove themselves.

Ewan Henderson is currently on loan at Ross County and it would actually be a better idea recalling him from his loan, rather than bringing in someone else as well.

There is no need to bring another player on loan.

Foden will not be at the club for any more than a season probably and he is certainly not needed right this moment.

Neil Lennon should be focusing on developing the great prospects that we have at our disposal already. They should not be written off before they have even featured for the side this season and with a busy schedule coming up for the Bhoys – Lennon could be looking to giving these boys more of a chance to prove themselves on the big stage.
