Former Manchester United defender Alexander Buttner has claimed that he rejected approaches from both Celtic and Rangers recently.

Speaking to De Gelderlander, as cited on Goal, the Dutch defender confirms that several teams were interested in him during the most recent summer transfer window.

Besiktas then put in a concrete offer but that fell through. Fenerbahce, PAOK, Apoel Nicosia and Celtic were all interested. This week Rangers and Stoke City became interested. But the decision had already been made. Revolution it is.

The player remains a free agent but has agreed to a deal to move to the MLS in 2020.

Would he have been a good addition for Celtic or were the club right to look elsewhere?

Celtic might be thankful that they missed out on a deal to sign Buttner this summer.

They were in the market for a left-back after losing Kieran Tierney to Arsenal but this may not have been the most senisble deal for the Hoops.

Would Alexander Buttner have been a good signing for Celtic?

Yes

No

Many years ago, Buttner was hailed as the next best young left-back at Manchester United. However, he flopped at Old Trafford and has hardly set the world alight since leaving the Premier League giants.

As a back-up, Celtic could have done worse, but it’s unlikely that Buttner would have been happy to come in and play second fiddle on a reasonable wage.
