Juventus president Andrea Agnelli has had his say on a potential Champions League reform, and his comments certainly bode well for Celtic.

According to the Daily Record, Agnelli believes the likes of Celtic and Ajax should be rewarded for winning their respective leagues with an automatic place in the group stages, rather than being forced to qualify through the qualifiers.

It’s right that if you perform in the international system, you stay in the international system. It would be great for clubs like Ajax, Celtic, (Legia) Warsaw knowing they can stay in Europe and not have to qualify via domestic system.

Agnelli’s comments are certainly a positive for Celtic, as it outlines how the likes of Juventus are also calling for a major reform to the Champions League, and a system that would reward the Hoops more than the current setup.

Do UEFA need to change the current Champions League setup?

Yes

No

As we know, Celtic and Ajax both had to go through the qualifying rounds of the Champions League this season, despite the latter reaching the semi-finals last season and winning the Eredivisie while the Hoops won the Treble Treble.

And while Celtic were knocked out in a shock defeat, Ajax’s success pioneers why the current setup must be changed in order to reward league winners over the likes of teams who finish fourth.
