Neil Lennon has issued his verdict on what players should do if they or any of their teammates are racially abused, but is it the correct call?

According to BBC Sport, Lennon revealed he would not “discourage” players from walking off the pitch in response to racist abuse, after Lazio were given a fine and a partial stadium ban for Celtic’s trip to Rome, following racist behaviour.

I would not discourage any player from walking off the pitch if he’s getting racially abused. I think I would encourage it because it’s pointing out that there is a wrong here. We all have to do a little bit more to prevent it and for individuals it’s personal and it’s very, very hurtful.

READ CELTIC VERDICT

It’s an incredibly difficult decision to make as arguments for staying on the pitch and walking off are equally as valid in my opinion.

On the one hand, refusing to walk off is a positive as it faces up to any racist abuse and shows that those responsible will not get away with their actions; as England did in Bulgaria with a 6-0 win.

Do you think players should walk off or stay on?

Walk off

Stay on

However, walking off also faces up to the problem, but in a different light, as it emphasises how the culprits will not be allowed to voice such disgusting views and get away with it.

Ultimately I think it is down to the players on the pitch and what they, their teammates, the manager and backroom staff believe to be the correct response on the day.
