Celtic have been linked with a move for Carlisle United defender Jarrad Branthwaite, following his highly impressive start to the season for the League Two side.

To learn a little bit more about what Branthwaite is like as a player, we spoke to Ryan, a Carlisle fan and @RyCUFC on Twitter, who gave us the low-down on the defender’s strengths, weaknesses and how much the League Two side may set as an asking price.

Q: hAVE YOU BEEN IMPRESSED BY BRANTHWAITE THIS SEASON?

A: Yes, he’s been a shining light, in a so far very poor season, it has been a joy to watch him emerge.

WHAT ARE HIS MAIN STRENGTHS?

He’s got a lot of them! He’s 6’4 so very good in the air and has bullied experienced strikers already in the air this season. His use of the ball is exceptional for a 17-year-old, you’d think he’s been playing for 20 years. He can use both feet and his sweeping cross-field balls, which more often than not hit there target are superb. Got a change of pace too, and so far, looks assured even when pressured.

What are his weaknesses?

Difficult to answer, as so far he doesn’t look like he has any! Not necessarily his ability, but you could argue a weakness may be that he’s not been tested yet; he’s not had a bad game or made a mistake. I’d ask how, when that undoubtedly happens due to his age, will he react. Will it hit his confidence, which is sky high at the moment.

Are you surprised to see teams interested in him already?

Absolutely not, I’m surprised we kept him in the summer to the honest, as there was constant rumours about teams asking about him.

How much do fans think he is worth?

Definitely £1million-plus at a minimum, plus a whole host of add ons! I think Ethan Ampadu went to Cheldea from Exeter for £1.3million, with potential to rise to £2.5million, but that was via a tribunal. Branthwaite, by Christmas, will have played more double Ampadu did prior to his move. If it was me I’d be asking for starting bids of £2.5million! But I’m not in charge and our current owners are renowned for accepting low offers in the past (but there are takeover talks so this might change). It could a be huge bidding war [for him]. The teams that are rumoured to be interested are all top 6 clubs in the Premier League. Liverpool, Spurs, etc all mentioned.
