Celtic and Rangers are “top European clubs” says Advocaat

Feyenoord manager Dick Advocaat has labelled Celtic and Rangers as “top European clubs” and revealed that Scottish football is “underestimated” in the Netherlands.

According to Sport Witness, the recently appointed Feyenoord boss told Voetbal International that his side’s Europa League clash with Rangers will not be easy before speaking about the stature of the two Scottish sides.

I have seen the match against Feyenoord and a few others and they have a very good selection. Scottish football is underestimated in the Netherlands.

Celtic and Rangers are top European clubs and they are close to the level they want to achieve. They have good players, all international players, it will be difficult for us.

Advocaat’s comments certainly emphasise that he respects Celtic and Rangers’ stature within the footballing world, unlike a certain Sam Allardyce.

The former Rangers boss has of course managed in Scotland before but even so, it’s excellent to hear and he does raise a good point.

For Advocaat’s sake however, he will certainly be hoping his side can get one over on Rangers in what is a very tight group in the Europa League, with just three points separating Young Boys in first and FC Porto in fourth.

Celtic meanwhile can secure an historic top spot in Group E if they beat Rennes and CFR Cluj lose to Lazio; as it would be the first time in history that the Hoops have finished top of a European group.
