Former Scotland international Alan Hutton believes Fraser Forster deserves a call-up to the England squad but claims it will be “difficult” for the 31-year-old.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton sees no reason why Forster cannot achieve his ambition of playing for England once again but warns the shot-stopper that it will not be easy due to the amount of competition.
I don’t see why not. He’s playing European football, contesting for cups. A lot of people look at the SPL and think that it’s not a high level but you still need to play to your best to win games, it doesn’t matter where you are.
If he’s playing to the top of his ability, which he’s been brilliant of late, I don’t see why not.

There’s great competition in the England squad for goalkeepers, there’s so many to choose from, but it’s like anyone – you want to play for your country and he’ll be no different. He’ll be targeting a spot but it will be difficult.

Hutton does make a good point, as Forster’s form this season certainly deserves recognition from Gareth Southgate.
The shot-stopper has produced a number of impressive performances this season, and an excellent double save against Rennes on Thursday further emphasised his good form.
However while he does deserve a recall to the squad, given how the England boss has tended to opt for younger players during his reign, a call-up for the 31-year-old could be unlikely.
Anything can happen between now and the end of the season though, and if Forster continues his heroics in between the sticks, he will surely give Southgate something to think about ahead of Euro 2020.
