Commons criticises Gerrard’s Celtic Park celebrations
Kris Commons has identified an “alarming trend” Rangers should be concerned about in their attempts to challenge Celtic for the title whilst also criticising Steven Gerrard for his Glasgow Derby celebrations last month.
Rangers suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat to Hearts last weekend, and Commons suggested in his column in the print edition of the Daily Mail (27/01/2020, Verdict Supplement, page 16), as cited by 67 Hail Hail, Gerrard should be ‘alarmed’ following a third lacklustre display in succession since the winter break.
The Sky Sports pundit also criticised the Rangers boss, suggesting he could have ‘egg on his face’ at the end of the season after his wild celebrations at Celtic Park last month.
That’s now three sub-standard displays on the trot. Gerrard admitted he was ‘bored’ watching the 2-0 Scottish Cup win over Stranraer as fringe players failed to take their chance. Next came a 1-0 win over St Mirren which was hardly anything to write home about, before they fell to defeat at Hearts yesterday.
That’s an alarming trend and Gerrard’s celebrations at the end of the Old Firm game prior to new year now look wildly premature. Towards the end of my career, I always tried to avoid giving it big licks.
You don’t want to end up with egg on your face, so you learn to keep a lid on it until you actually have a trophy in your hands.

Commons makes an excellent point about Gerrard’s “premature” celebrations last month, in my opinion.
Do you think Commons has a point about Gerrard?
Yes
No
Whilst you expect to see his passion following a big derby victory, he did celebrate as if the result was the title clinching win, rather than a victory half-way through the season.
Celtic are now fully in the driving seat following Rangers’ slip up against Hearts, and Neil Lennon must keep his Bhoys fully focused to pile the pressure on their rivals even more.
