Noel Whelan believes Jeremie Frimpong’s return from injury gives Celtic the same boost as a “new signing” does, and he is right to suggest that.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan praised the full-back and hailed the impact his return has had on the squad.

Frimpong is a good player. He is lively, he has got a trick and he has energy. Again, another plus for Celtic getting him back, getting these players back at the end of the season which can determine an outcome in a game. It is like a new signing when you get players back like that.

Whelan is spot on here, as having Frimpong back to full fitness has allowed Neil Lennon to be versatile with his tactics.

Whilst he was on the sidelines, Lennon was almost forced to use the 3-5-2 system with James Forrest at wing-back.

Have you been impressed by Frimpong this season?

Yes

No

Yes he had Moritz Bauer as a potential option to use at right-back, but it appears as though the Celtic boss does not have much faith in the Stoke City loanee, given how he has only made 13 appearances in total this season (Transfermarkt).

However with Frimpong back, Lennon has had a bit more flexibility to revert to a four man defence with the 19-year-old at right-back and Jamesy further forwards, as he did in the first leg against FC Copenhagen last week.
