Mikael Lustig’s decision to leave Celtic last summer and join Belgian side Gent appears as though it hasn’t quite gone to plan.
Respected Belgian outlet Voetbal Nieuws, as cited by the Daily Record, embarrassingly named both Lustig and Rangers’ Ianis Hagi in their flopped transfers team of the season in the Belgian Pro League.
It’s maybe harsh on Lustig because he often played for Gent, especially in Europe. But after a flying start, with three assists in the league, he lost his place to Alessio Castro-Montes at right back. He was a free transfer so it wasn’t an expensive blunder, but he was a fairly unnecessary transfer.

Despite having played 30 times for Gent in all competitions this season, including in all of their Europa League group stage games, Voetbal Nieuws clearly haven’t been overly struck by what they’ve seen from the Swede.
And that’s disappointing to hear as it suggests his decision to leave Celtic last summer hasn’t really worked out for him.
The right-back contributed so much to the Hoops during his seven-and-a-half years with the club, winning the title in every season he was at Parkhead as well as completing the Treble Treble last year.
But to be labelled a flop and an “unnecessary” transfer is rather embarrassing for the 33-year-old, and it appears as though he hasn’t been able to replicate the form he showed for Celtic in Belgium.
