Former Aberdeen forward Noel Whelan believes Celtic will be able to find a “gem” this summer if they lose one of their key men in the transfer window, and his comments should give supporters reason to be hopeful.
Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan praised Celtic’s scouting network and claimed the Hoops will be able to continue finding excellent replacements for when they are forced to sell high profile players.
Their scouting network is fantastic. You look at [Virgil] van Dijk and certain players that have come in and out of that football club and Celtic have got it right. They notice a player, get him, groom him and when the time is right and they have done their part they sell them on for a very healthy fee.
That keeps the club sustainable. They have had amazing transfers. They always seem to find that gem.

Whelan makes an excellent point here.
Whilst it can be incredibly frustrating to see Celtic sell their best players on a regular basis, that is what allows the club to be as successful as they are.
And it’s also a business model that has seen Celtic create such an impressive scouting network, as they are constantly on the look out for players who can fill the void left following a big departure.
Take Moussa Dembele’s move for example. The Hoops dealt with that scenario expertly by identifying Odsonne Edouard as a potential replacement, getting him in on loan to learn from Dembele before signing him for under half of what Lyon paid the club.
Therefore, Celtic have the track record and the scouting network in place to deal with high profile departures as they’ve proven in the past.
And as Whelan suggests, that network means Celtic are likely to find another “gem” this summer if they are forced to sell.
