This evening, BT Sport are treating us all to a 30-minute highlight show of Celtic’s famous 2-1 win over Barcelona back in 2012, so we’ve decided to take a look at where the former Hoops who featured that night are now.
FRASER FORSTER
We all know where The Great Wall is at the moment, as he has recreated the form he showed that night against Barca throughout the course of this season.
His performance that night saw him receive praise from Lionel Messi, and you know you’re doing something right when one of the greatest players of all time describes your display as “the best goalkeeping performance” he’s ever seen.
MIKAEL LUSTIG
This time last year, Lustig was the only player who featured that night who was still at the club.
He left last summer to join Belgian outlet Gent, putting an end to his seven-and-a-half-year spell with the Hoops.
However, his move hasn’t quite panned out as he would’ve hoped, with Voetbal Nieuws describing him as one of the biggest transfer flops in the Belgian Pro League this season.
EFE AMBROSE
Ambrose left Celtic to join Hibernian permanently back in 2017 after a short loan spell at Easter Road towards the end of that season.
The Nigeria international had a-year-and-a-half with Hibs before leaving for Derby County in January last season.
However, that spell didn’t quite work out for him, as he left as a free agent without making an appearance for them.
Ambrose then returned to Scotland earlier this year to sign for Livingstone.
KELVIN WILSON
One of his standout performances for Celtic came against Barca that night, before he left the club in 2013.
He then had spells with Nottingham Forest and Rotherham before he retired in 2017.
ADAM MATTHEWS
Matthews played out of position at left-back against Barca, with Emilio Izaguirre ruled out.
The defender remained with Celtic before moving to Sunderland in 2015, before he left the Black Cats and signed for Charlton at the start of this season.
He was linked with a surprise return to Celtic last summer prior to his move to the Valley.
KRIS COMMONS
Commons was a hugely important player for Celtic during his time with the club, scoring 89 goals and creating 72 assists in 227 appearances.
He then left the club in 2017 before hanging up his boots, and he is now a pundit with Sky Sports.
VICTOR WANYAMA
Wanyama, of course, scored that thumping header to kick things off on that night in 2012.
The Kenyan was heavily linked with a return to Celtic during the first half of the season and in January, but a deadline day move failed to materialise.
The midfielder then signed for MLS outfit Montreal Impact after leaving Tottenham on a free transfer, signing a three-year deal worth around $3million-a-year.
JOE LEDLEY
A number of Celtic fans urged Ledley to return to Celtic after he tweeted about Fraser Forster’s return earlier this season.
The midfielder made 157 appearances for the Hoops before leaving in 2014, before having spells with Crystal Palace, Derby and Charlton. He then signed for Newcastle Jets in the Hyundai A-League back in February.
CHARLIE MULGREW
Set-piece specialist Mulgrew ended his six-year spell with Celtic when he left the club for a second time, this time to join Blackburn in the English Championship.
The Scotland international won eight trophies during his time with the Hoops, scoring 29 and assisting 34 in 208 appearances for the club.
He spent the first half of this campaign on loan with Wigan before returning to Ewood Park in January.
GEORGIOS SAMARAS
The Greek god won seven trophies in total during his six-year spell with Celtic, scoring 71 goals and creating 49 assists in 243 appearances in total.
Samaras has been around the block a wee bit since leaving Celtic in 2014, having spells with West Brom, Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, Rayo OKC in the US, Real Zaragoza and Turkish third tier outfit Samsunspor.
He retired after leaving the latter back in 2018.
MIKU
Mik-who? The Spaniard spent the 2012/13 season on loan with Celtic, scoring just two goals in 14 appearances in all competitions.
He returned to Getafe at the end of the campaign before having spells with Qatari side Al Gharafa, Rayo Vallecano, India’s Bengaluru FC and he is now playing for Omonia Nikosia in Cyprus.
TONY WATT
Watt was one of the two substitutes to come off the bench against Barca that night, and Watt a substitution that proved to be!
He scored one of the most famous Celtic goals in the last decade, but he failed to really establish himself as a regular player for the Hoops in the coming seasons.
The striker has since had nine different clubs following his departure in 2014, and he returned to Scotland earlier this year to join Motherwell on a free transfer.
BEREM KAYAL
Kayal was the second substitution Lennon made on that famous night, coming on in the closing stages to help Celtic see out the game.
The midfielder left the Hoops to join Brighton in 2015, and he has spent the rest of his career with the Seagulls, though he also had a loan spell with Charlton during the first half of this season.
