He’s only been at the club for a year but Celtic want to reward Jeremie Frimpong with a new contract after he impressed so much in his debut season, according to a report from Football Insider.
The teenager started the season as a backup player but had broken into the first team by the end of the shortened campaign and his performances saw him win the club’s Young Player of the Season award.
The club now seems keen to give the 19-year-old a new contract, one that rewards him as the regular first-team squad member that he now is, rather than a young developmental product.
Frimpong signed a four-year deal when he arrived from Man City last summer but given that he’s now firmly part of Neil Lennon’s plans, Celtic want to rip that contract up and hand him a new one, although the terms of such a new deal are still unknown.

Frimpong deserves great credit for becoming a first-team player in such a short period of time, so it makes sense that Celtic would alter his contract from one of a young prospect to one of a first-team member.
It also makes sense from a business point of view to tie down a young player who could garner interest from elsewhere if he continues to play at a high level.
Celtic could easily keep Frimpong on his current deal and the player could do little about it, but rewarding him with a better contract is the right thing to do for the player personally, and for the morale of the squad.
