Lee O’Connor joins Tranmere on a season-long loan deal

Celtic defender Lee O’Connor has joined Tranmere Rovers on loan for the entire 2020/21 season.

The 20-year-old joined Celtic from Manchester United in the summer of 2019 but he wasn’t able to force his way into Neil Lennon’s plans and was eventually sent out on loan to Partick Thistle in January.

However, the early curtailment of the Scottish season meant that the Irishman only played a handful of games for Thistle before he returned to Celtic Park.

He will now get the opportunity to play a full season of first-team football in England’s League Two with recently relegated Tranmere.

The early cancelation of the Scottish season prevented O’Connor from getting regular first-team football, so it’s no surprise to see that the Irish international has been loaned out once again.

What is a bit of a surprise is that he’s gone to a League Two club as it may have been beneficial for all parties if he went to a club at a higher level. 

However, a season playing regular games on Merseyside should do the youngster a world of good and hopefully, he’ll return next summer ready to compete for a place in the Celtic side.
