Former Celtic marksman Gerry Cearney was bullish in his predictions for the Bhoys’ summer transfer fortunes, backing the team to invest shrewdly.

Celtic look likely to lose their prolific talisman Odsonne Edouard to FA Cup winners Leicester City, with one report from Football Insider claiming that personal terms have been agreed and Edouard has said his goodbyes.

Consequentially, Ange Postecoglou’s side will be looking to fill the striking void with Leigh Griffiths also finding himself out of contract.

With Albian Ajeti failing to shoulder the striking burden regularly, the paramountcy of recruiting a top-quality striker is apparent – and Cearney feels Celtic can be trusted to recruit a capable target.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun:

“Only one or two players in the world are irreplaceable. Celtic have a fantastic reputation for pulling one out the bag. No one had heard much about Odsonne when he first came — and he lit up the Premiership.

“There was Moussa Dembele not long ago. Go way back to Mark Viduka, Pierre van Hooijdonk and Henrik Larsson. Historically, that position has been filled by some high-quality players. And I don’t think it devalues anything if you haven’t heard a great deal about them.

“The majority were shrewd signings. That’s down to the scouting system. Hopefully Celtic attract someone of a similar ilk who is going to get goals and be a talisman in the big games.”

Despite a disappointing season in which Celtic’s ten-in-a-row title ambitions were decimated, Edouard found a way to shine.

Will Celtic adequately replace Edouard?

Yes

No

With 16 goals and 5 assists in just 26 outings in the Premiership, the French marksman looked as formidable as ever.

Replacing a player of his quality is a tall order, and Celtic must act quickly to ensure his replacement has time to gel with his teammates.
