Frank McAvennie Backs Patient Approach to Celtic Rebuild

Former Celtic ace Frank McAvennie has cooled expectations of imminent signings by predicting when fans could expect to see new incomings.

Following the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as Celtic’s new manager, the club cemented a key building block as part of a transitional process – but McAvennie has knocked back any suggestion that recruitment will begin immediately.

Instead, McAvennie believes that Postecoglou requires time to work with the players first-hand before making any definitive transfer decisions.

Speaking to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops marksman claimed:

“I would not expect any signings for the next two weeks,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“I see people in the paper saying everything will get going now Postecoglou’s here.

“But he won’t see the squad for weeks. How can he make decisions about who needs to come in and who needs to go without seeing the players?

“So much needs to be done. I want him to get going right away. But I would rather he waits until he can see the players for himself.

“He can’t have other people making the decisions for him.”

If McAvennie’s verdict actualises, it will be a let-down for Celtic fans with an insatiable appetite for a transfer revolution.

However, McAvennie’s cautious attitude boasts some merit.

With the squad broken up on international duty and plenty of contract uncertainty hanging over key players, Postecoglou would do well not to anchor his thinking too prematurely before the squad’s situation becomes clearer.

When the dust settles after the Euros and the sale of out-of-contract players begins, all parties concerned can move forward in the window with a greater degree of certainty.
