Glen Whelan Delivers Verdict on Gordon Strachan Links

Former Premiership striker Noel Whelan has praised a potential move by Celtic that would see Gordon Strachan offered a senior role at the club.

Reports from The Scottish Sun over the weekend had claimed that the ex-Hoops boss was being considered for a technical role at Celtic Park.

His son Gavin already has a coaching role at the club, whilst Strachan’s past associations with the club renders him as having an affinity with the Bhoys.

Reports in The Scotsman have contrasted claims that Strachan is a serious candidate for a technical role, but that did not prevent Whelan from having his say as to whether Strachan would be an ideal candidate for the job.

“He knows Celtic, that’s for sure,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“He’s been working at Dundee so he’s stayed in the game.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if they did reach out to him. But it’s up to Gordon, whether he feels that job is right for him.

“I know Gavin is there, his son. So that would make sense. But you have to look at the job he’s done at Dundee.

“He’s been a revelation and he has the experience. Would it help the first team? I’m not sure.

“Right now, what they need is to get contracts sorted and players out of the club because that’s where the problems were last year.”

With the club in a transitional period, filling in key vacancies can be seen as the stepping stone towards establishing a bedrock of stability ahead of pre-season.

Recruiting Ange Postecoglou was a major milestone, but Whelan rightly points out that a Strachan deal is far from a complete one.

Directors to assist with the technical side could be the next backroom step as the club considers the contractual situations of key personnel.
