Ex-Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips is ‘surprised’ that the Black Cats’ talismanic striker appears to be close to a Celtic move.

Following fresh rounds of talks, the free-scoring Wearside hitman is reported by Football Insider to be ‘very keen’ on a Parkhead move.

Wyke mustered 25 goals and 4 assists in 42 League One appearances, but his side were confined to yet another season in the English third division following play-off heartbreak.

Wyke is a free agent on July 1 and although Sunderland are in contract talks, as per the Northern Echo, the club has increasingly ‘accepted defeat’ following constructive talks with Celtic.

As a result, it looks as though the 28-year-old English marksman could be an early signing through the doors of Paradise.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips issued some contract claims as well as some predictions surrounding how Wyke could impact on Ange Postecoglou’s preferred style of play at Celtic.

“I’m assuming Celtic are offering him five times what Sunderland are and he can command more because he is a free agent.

“I think he could do a job up at Celtic but only if you give him the right service. You have to play a certain way when he is in your side, you need to be direct.

“Sunderland went from back to front quite early at times. If you are playing with wingers he will always provide you an option in the box. He is always in and around the penalty spot.

“His signing would be a big indication as to how Postecoglou plans to play next season.

“I am surprised they want to sign him in truth but on a free, he may be used as an impact sub. He will probably not play every week.”

As a potential free signing and with a prolific record for Sunderland last season, Celtic have little to lose in offering a long-term contract.

Will Celtic sign Wyke?

Yes

No

With Odsonne Edouard likely to be sold this summer and with doubts swirling over Leigh Griffiths’ future, Celtic may be in the market for more than one forward.

Consequentially, Phillips’ claim on Wyke being an ‘impact sub’ is far from dumbfounded. He may simply provide competition to a flagship signing.
