Celtic full-back Josip Juranovic has made an interesting comment about one aspect of the Hoops side.
The player feels that the Bhoys have the best defence in the league – and that is correct, the team has conceded the lowest number of goals – but he reckons that there is one area of the game that the Hoops need to improve on.
“I think we are the best defenders in the league. But we have conceded, not stupid goals, but goals we should not concede from corners and free-kicks” be said (Football Scotland).
The £2.5m star is correct to point out that the Hoops really should be doing better when it comes to some of the goals that the team has conceded. The team really has conceded too many goals from set pieces.
In a way, it is a good thing that Juranovic has spotted this and spoken about it, as it means that the players must be aware that the Hoops can do better when it comes to defending set pieces.
That could mean that the Hoops players have been discussing the team’s problem when it comes to defending set pieces, and have hopefully come to a solution to the problem during the winter break.
In a way, the Celtic defence has probably done better than expected, when you consider that the team has got practically a new defence compared to last season, with the likes of Carl Starfelt, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Anthony Ralston coming into the side.
Ange Postecoglou should be pleased with how the defence has performed for the most part, and he should be happy that at the time of writing, Celtic have conceded the lowest amount of goals in the Premiership, 12 in 20 games.
But as Juranovic has pointed out, the Hoops do need to sort out giving away goals from set pieces. That will need to be the case when Celtic take on Rangers next month.
The Hoops lost the first Glasgow derby of the season due to a set piece goal, and last season Celtic struggled to defend set pieces against the Ibrox side.
That will hopefully be addressed in the second-half of the season, starting against Hibernian tonight.
The Easter Road side could cause the Hoops some problems from set pieces, they did score from one in the Premier Sports Cup Final. But hopefully after a few weeks training, the Hoops will have overcome the problems that the team has when it comes to defending set pieces. The team will have a much greater chance of winning the league if the defending improves.
