Ahead of tonight’s Premiership game against Hibernian, Celtic have scored 42 goals in 20 league games. That is a decent total, only one behind top scorers Rangers, and the Hoops have coped well for the most part with having so many injuries in attack.
What is interesting to look at is who has stepped up to find the back of the net in the absence of Celtic’s strikers for much of the season.
Fbref.com shows that, so far this season, 14 players have scored at least one goal for the Bhoys in the league. Interestingly, six of those players aren’t really considered as ‘forward’ players – Anthony Ralston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Callum McGregor, Josip Juranovic, Nir Bitton and Liam Scales.
One player that scored for the Hoops in the league this season – Odsonne Edouard – is no longer at the club. He weighed in with two goals, whilst perhaps unsurprisingly, the top scorer so far this season is Kyogo, with eight goals.
Perhaps more surprisingly, Anthony Ralston is the fifth top league scorer so far with four goals. That is testament to his ability to get forward, even though you would not consider the player an attacker, per se.
What might be unexpected is that so many players have found the back of the net so far, and that number could only increase when Celtic’s January signings get up and running.
The Hoops have managed to share the goals around this season, and not have one main goal scorer. It probably would have been Kyogo, but injuries have prevented him from reaching double figures in the league so far.
It is a good thing that the goals are being shared though, as it shows that Celtic have attacking threats not just from the players that you expect to find the back of the net.
For example, few would have predicted that Liam Scales would score a league goal for Celtic this season, but he has. The same could perhaps be said of Callum McGregor, whose game doesn’t really lend itself to finding the back of the net, but he has.
One slight disappointment is that Carl Starfelt has yet to score a league goal for the Hoops despite being regularly getting forward at set pieces. Hopefully he breaks that duck in the second-half of the season.
If Celtic can continue to share the goals around for the rest of the season, then the Hoops will hopefully have a successful second-half to the league campaign.
