Opinion: Should Celtic swoop for Premiership star this month?

One wonders if Celtic will look to sign a midfielder in the transfer window should Callum McGregor’s facial injury be a serious one.

There as yet has been no official confirmation on how long the Celtic skipper will be out of action with his injury, but the Daily Record reports that he could be out for up to two months, which would be a massive blow to both the player and the club.

If McGregor is out for that duration, Celtic could perhaps move to sign a new midfielder, who could come into the side in replace the Hoops captain in the short-term, but also be involved in the club long-term. One player who should be considered for that role is Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson.

Ferguson has been one of the most important players for the Pittodrie side for a few years, and he has also stood out as one of the best performers in the Premiership.

He is a similar type of player to the Hoops skipper, in that they are both central midfielders, but Ferguson does offer more of a goal threat, as he has scored 10 goals for the Pittodrie side so far this season.

Those numbers of goals from midfield are invaluable, and it is more than any Celtic central midfielder has scored this season. The central midfield’s highest scorer this season is David Turnbull, who has scored nine goals but is currently out injured.

Ferguson could also replace Turnbull, whose goals have been badly missed when he has been out of the side recently. 

Of course, if Aberdeen don’t want to sell Ferguson before the transfer window closes at the end of January then he won’t be leaving the Premiership side.

But if there are indications that Aberdeen are interested in selling the player, then Celtic should consider making an offer for the 22-year-old.

What would be interesting is how much money Aberdeen would want for the player. The club did reject a transfer request from Ferguson last year, and perhaps that could play a part in how Aberdeen value the player.

What is intriguing is that the Daily Record reports that Aberdeen are interested in signing Celtic’s Mikey Johnston on loan this month. Maybe Johnston could be part of a deal for Ferguson?

Only time will tell if Celtic decide to make a move for Ferguson. But if McGregor’s injury is as bad as first feared, the Hoops should at least consider signing the midfielder before the transfer window closes.
