Celtic are the top scorers in the Premiership this season, having scored 67 goals, a total that the club should be pleased with, as it has helped the Bhoys get to the top to the league table with only seven games remaining.

There is a breakdown of the goals scored by the Hoops on WhoScored.Com, and there is a bit of a surprise in one aspect – only one goal that Celtic have scored in the league has come from a counter attack.

That has to be considered a surprise when you look at the number of attacking players that the Hoops have in their squad, and the fact that Joe Hart has often liked to throw the ball down field as quick as he can when he gets the chance.

It will be interesting to see what Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou makes of the fact that the Hoops haven’t manged to score many counter attack goals this season. It doesn’t seem to be an aspect of the side which Celtic are making strides in, but that can’t be taken as a criticism as the Hoops have managed to score the most goals in the Premiership so far this season.

It is not a shock to see that most of Celtic’s goals this season have come from open play – WhoScored.Com shows that 52 goals – 75% – have come from that aspect of the game, with four penalties and one own goal.

11 goals have come from set pieces, and it is just in recent weeks that the Hoops seems to have got to grips with how to regularly find the back of the net from set pieces.

Perhaps that goal breakdown table will look a bit different by the time the Premiership season ends in Many. Obviously Celtic will have scored more goals. The target should be to reach 80 goals by the end of the season, and 90 shouldn’t be considered out of the question.

Perhaps the biggest change will be in the number of set pieces scored from, as Celtic have dramatically improved in that area in recent games. It remains to be seen if the number of penalties will be improved upon.

As for the aforementioned goals scored from counter attacks, perhaps Celtic will add one or two goals to that tally. It would be a boost if it did, as it would showcase some for the most part unseen side of the current Celtic side. Only time will if that number of goals will increase.
