Celtic’s best Champion’s League goals of the modern era.

Zadok the Priest returns returns to Celtic Park next September after a long absence and we’re looking forward to those Champions League nights again with great anticipation.

I’ve been looking back at some of the greatest CL nights in the modern era at Celtic Park and re-living the amazing moments and goals of those nights.

Its been a while since Celtic Park was considered a fortress, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Ange may just turn it back into one.

For today’s duel, I’ve decided to pick 6 of the best and most memorable CL goals in recent memory.

You know the drill, all you have to do is go through the duels, selecting your ‘winner’ from each match up. That winner continues into the next duel, to be pitted against a new CL goal. If that one is still your winner, select again. If not, choose the other CL goal in the duel.

Shunsuke Nakamura v Man Utd -2

In the return leg during the 06/07 CL group stages, Man Utd came to Celtic Park with the home team looking to exact revenge after their narrow defeat at Old Trafford. Two heroes emerged that night, Shunsuke Nakamura and Artur Boruc. Naka scored a sublime free kick, which turned out to be the winner, Boruc ensured it was, with his late penalty save from Louis Saha. A night to remember!

Tony Watt v Barcelona

One of the greatest CL nights in Celtic’s history on November 7th 2012, the home team were one up in the closing stages of the tie when Fraser Forster sent a long ball down the pitch. 18 year old Tony Watt got on the end of it and duly ran at the Barca goal, despatching the ball into the bottom left corner of Victor Valdes’ goal. Cue scenes of absolute pandemonium at Celtic Park! Celtic went on to win the match 2-1.

Celtic went to Old Trafford and gave Manchester United the fright of their lives in the 06/07 group stages. Naka scored two fantastic free kicks, with this one the sweetest of the two. Celtic narrowly lost the tie 3-2.

Chris Sutton v Juvetus

In what was an astounding, topsy turvy group match between Celtic and Juventus at Celtic Park on the 31st of October 2001, Celtic ran out winners by the narrowest of margins. The tie finished 4-3, but the pick of the goals was Celtic’s 3rd, a fantastic volley from Chris Sutton into Buffon’s top right hand corner. A game for the ages, but despite the win, Celtic were still unable to advance from their group.

Scott Sinclair v Anderlecht

One of the few CL goals from the last decade due to the fact Celtic didn’t make the group stages as often as in the previous decade. This was an even rarer CL away win for the club and they did it in style, beating Anderlecht 3-0 in their own back yard on September 27th 2018. The pick of the goals was Scott Sinclair’s, the third in the tie. In a classic counter attack, Sinclair found the ball at his feet and drove at the Anderlecht goal, before releasing a thunderbolt of a shot which zipped into the top of the Anderlecht net. The win all but guaranteed European football for Celtic after Christmas.

Scott McDonald v AC Milan

Celtic were heading for a 1-1 draw against Italian giants AC Milan on a wet October CL night in 2007 at Celtic Park. Scott McDonald had other ideas and after Barry Robson’s shot was saved by Dida, the rebound fell to the little Australian who duly despatched it into the bottom left corner of the Milan net. Dida would later fall to the ground clutching his face after receiving a friendly tap on the cheek from on over zealous Celtic fan!
