One interesting story to emerge over the last few days concerns Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy.
The Scottish Sun reports that the Hoops assistant is a contender to become the new manager of FC Midtjylland. The report goes on to state that Kennedy would ‘consider the offer’ to become manager of a team that Celtic played in the Champions League qualifiers last season.
With the Danish side not currently having a permanent manager, we shall find out soon enough if they want to appoint Kennedy if they make an approach, and the Celtic man will then have a decision to make.
Kennedy has been linked with a move away from Celtic before, and Hibernian were very keen to appoint him as their manager in 2019, but he turned down the job in order to stay at Celtic Park.
Kennedy has been at Celtic for many years as a player and a coach, and perhaps he feels that now is the time to make his on mark on the game as a manager. It will be interesting to know what Hoops boss Ange Postecoglou makes of the speculation.
You have to imagine that he will be keen t keep Kennedy at the club for the sake of continuity. He will not want to lose one one of the key members of his first-team staff at such an important time of the season.
However, perhaps that is a reason why Harry Kewell joined the Hoops coaching staff in the summer, as maybe Kennedy indicated to the club that if the right offer came along, he would consider leaving Celtic and becoming his own boss.
The most important man at Celtic is Postecoglou, but Kennedy is well up there in importance when you consider that he has been kept on at the club under so many managers and has been part of the coaching staff for so many winning teams at Celtic Park.
It is fair to say that his role as caretaker manager at Celtic at the end of season 2020/21 didn’t go as planned, and maybe that is something that he wants to make up for, and if he takes the job at FC Midtjylland, he will have the chance to show that he is his own man, and he is able to do a managerial job in better circumstances.
Only time will tell what happens with John Kennedy, but as he has been an important part of Postecoglou’s coaching staff, the Hoops boss will no doubt be keen that he remains at Celtic Park.
