Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas has made some interesting comments about his current loan deal at Dutch side FC Utrecht. The goalkeeper, who Celtic signed for £4.5m from AEK Athens in 2020, lost his place at Celtic Park under Neil Lennon, and failed to regain it when Ange Posteocoglou took over as Celtic manager.

With his lacking of playing time it seemed inevitable that the player was going to leave the Hoops in the summer, and that is what happened as a one-year loan deal was agreed with the Eredivisie side.

In an interview with Dutch website De Telegraaf, the goalkeeper has spoken about how he is feeling about playing in the Netherlands.

I enjoy it here and I feel at home. My family is having fun too. I also enjoy the fans in Stadion Galgenwaard. They are crazy. I don’t feel any pressure. I have a contract until the end of the season.

Looking at Barkas’ comments objectively, it seems that if possible he wants to make the move to the Netherlands a permanent one, and he has no intention for returning to Celtic, and really you can’t blame him for that, when you consider that he didn’t have the best of times in his two seasons in Glasgow.

The fact that both he and his family seem happy with his current situation indicates that he is enjoying his football, which he didn’t really get a chance to when he was at Celtic.

The move seems to have paid off to an extent for Barkas, as in seven appearances for Utrecht he has conceded 10 goals, and kept three clean sheets, including two in his last two performances for the team.

If he continues to perform to that level, you have to think that Utrecht will be looking to make the loan move a permanent one, and that would be best for both the player and for Celtic, as with the number of goalkeepers that the Hoops have at Celtic Park, there is little to no chance of the player getting a run of games for the Bhoys.

You have to think that Barkas has played his last game for Celtic, and he will go down as not one of the best signings that the Hoops have made in recent years, as he cost a lot of money, and failed to hold down a first-team place for the Bhoys. These things can happen, both parties can hopefully move on to new chapters in the next 12 months.
