Looking at the ages of the current Celtic squad, the Hoops have a lot of players in their 20s in the squad, which suggests that the club have a number of players who could be at the club for a number of years, as long as the Bhoys are able to keep hold of them and not sell them off.
However, there is one area of the squad where Celtic should be looking to get the average age of the player down, and that is in goal.
The three goalkeepers in the Celtic first-team squad – Joe Hart, Ben Siegrist and Scott Bain – are all in their 30s, and the average age of the current Celtic goalkeepers is 32, which isn’t that old for a goalkeeper, but the Hoops should have plans in place to bring a younger goalkeeper to the side, either through the ranks, or by signing a player in the summer transfer window.
You have to think that Joe Hart won’t be the first choice goalkeeper for the Hoops for that much longer, as he is 35-years-old, and perhaps his performances this season haven’t been as good as his displays for the Bhoys last season, and that could well mean that the former Manchester City man slowly gets phased out of the Celtic side from next season.
Ben Siegrist is 30-years-old and Scott Bain is 31-years-old, and one of those players is worth keeping, probably Siegrist, as he has more of an upside to his current Celtic career, whilst the same isn’t really true of Bain, who has rarely featured for the Hoops over the last few seasons.
It will be interesting to see if any of the current Celtic goalkeepers leave the club in the summer, with Bain the most likely candidate, and you have to think that depending on if the Hoops sign another goalkeeper, the club might well decide to move on Joe Hart as well.
If Celtic don’t sign a goalkeeper in the summer, they might well decide to bring a goalkeeper through the ranks, and 19-year-old Tobi Oluwayemi is highly-rated by Celtic, but it might be too soon for him to break through into the Hoops first-team squad.
There hasn’t really been a lot of talk about the Celtic goalkeeping situation, as the Hoops have been buying players for other areas of the squad, and there has been plenty of debate about the Celtic futures of Josip Juranovic and Georgios Giakoumakis. But it is time for the average age of the Celtic goalkeeping department to be brought down in the summer.
