Opinion: 1 key pass Celtic star’s cameo showed plenty of promise
It took Celtic a while to get the transfer for South Korean striker Hyeongyu Oh over the line, but it didn’t take long for the 21-year-old to make his first-team debut for the Hoops, as he came on in the last 10 minutes of the recent win over Dundee United.
It is fair to say that Oh’s cameo showed plenty of promise, as WhoScored.Com shows he had one key pass in the game, and it should have led to a third goal for the Hoops in the game.
With the very last piece of play in the game, Oh found himself out on the wing, and he put in a superb pinpoint cross into the direction of Daizen Maeda, who headed over the bar when it seemed easier to score.
It was a pity that Maeda didn’t find the back of the net, but it was certainly excellent play from the new Hoops signing, and you could already see in the brief cameo why Ange Postecoglou was so eager to bring the player to the club.
Even though the player has been brought to Celtic Park as a striker, it was perhaps significant that he was on the wing to deliver a cross, as it shows that he is a player who can play not only as a striker, but can drift into other areas of the pitch, which is what Kyogo has done at times for the Hoops.
Ange Postecoglou seems to like that type of striker, as it allows Celtic’s wingers and attacking midfielders to drift into the penalty box and find the back of the net, which Jota did in the win over Dundee United as he opened the scoring for the Hoops.
The player wasn’t afraid to go in for a challenge too, and that will be important as he gets to grips with the unique nature of the Scottish game. Celtic have two Premiership games this week, against Livingston and St Johnstone, and you have to think that Oh will be involved in both games.
Will he start either game? Probably not. But the more game time Oh gets the better, as he has not played any football since the World Cup. It will take time for the forward to get really up to speed at Celtic, but it was a good sign for his time in Scottish football that he was able to have an impact in his brief cameo at Tannadice. Hopefully he gets more game time this week, and it would be superb if he got his first Celtic goal as well.
18 months of square bashing during his military service will have done no harm either along with his football talent,in his preparation for spl football.
