Opinion: Celtic should spend big in key area of squad this summer
Joe Hart has been a good signing for Celtic since he joined the club from Tottenham more than a year ago. He has been the first choice goalkeeper, and his performances for the most part have been good to great, and he has helped the Hoops win one title and is hopefully on the way to helping win another.
However, it is not really giving much away by suggesting that he won’t be Celtic’s long-term first choice goalkeeper. Hart is 35-years-old, and his contract expires at the end of next season.
The contract situation is the same for another Celtic goalkeeper in Scott Bain, and you have to think that Conor Hazard will be leaving Celtic sooner rather than later in a search for regular first-team football.
That leaves Benjamin Siegrist, who has played twice for the Hoops this season, and is probably a candidate to be the long-term second choice goalkeeper at Celtic Park.
Celtic haven’t really spent that much money on goalkeepers since Ange Postecoglou took over as manager, Hart cost £1m when he joined the Hoops, and in a way that is understandable when you consider that Celtic spent a lot of money on Vasilis Barkas, and he turned out to be a very poor signing.
However, you would trust Ange Postecoglou to spend money wisely when it comes to signing a goalkeeper, and the Hoops should consider spending big on a long-term replacement for Hart in the summer transfer window.
If Celtic can spend around £3m on a goalkeeper that is going to be at the club for around five years, it would be a great signing, as it would mean that the Hoops don’t need to worry about the position any time soon.
The Hoops will be working on signings for next season already, and it will be interesting to find out if a goalkeeper is on the list of potential new signings.
It should be, as it is a very important position that Celtic will be looking to improve in if the Hoops are to make as much progress in Europe as the club would like.
Perhaps Joe Hart will move on from Celtic this summer, only time will tell on that front, and that will make the Hoops’ search for a new number one goalkeeper even more important.
The Hoops have a very good squad at the moment, but the evolution under Ange Postecoglou needs to continue, and the next stage of that could well be the club looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.
I agree 100%
Strange Creatures are keepers….We don’t want to get Burned like Barkas again so would rather Promote from within We have Siegrist as nmbr 1 young Tobi & Hazard as experienced back-up
Benjamin Siegrist was great at united, Hart still has a year and Tobi Oluwayemi is supposedly an excellent keeper who is on loan to get pro first team football and experience. Add Bain and Hazard and we have 5 keepers.
If Ange doesn’t play Yuki for the rest of the season then I would rather we spend the money on another centre half in the mould of CCV as Starfelt will get embarrassed in the champions league also we need to find out if Iwata is up to the job too or else we will need a holding midfielder to play beside Cal when the champions league comes, if we have hopes to get out the group even in third to the Europa league after Christmas.
Joe Hart is clearly Celts No.1 Benjamin Siegrest is a capable stand in as is Scott Bain so there is no need for any panic buying of a new keeper for a few years yet. We also have a few good youngsters coming through and with the right guidance could be a Celtic hero of the future!
On another note will folk please get off Carl Starfelts back, he’s been steady since his return from injury and every bit as reliable as Cameron Carter-Vickers
