When you are looking at Celtic’s best players since Ange Postecoglou took over as Hoops manager. Cameron Carter-Vickers has to be up there with the very best.
The centre-back has rarely put a foot wrong since joining the Hoops from Tottenham, initially on loan then on a permanent deal before the start of the current season.
His excellent form of last season has continued this season, and his partnership with Carl Starfelt is a big reason why the Hoops have been so successful under the current Hoops manager.
Carter-Vickers has nothing to apologise for after such great performances, but one wonders if he is annoyed that he missed a chance to all but clinch Celtic’s place in the Scottish Cup Final last season.
With the Hoops one-nil up against Rangers in the semi-final, the centre-back had a great chance to double the lead, but hit the bar from close range, and the Bhoys ended up losing the game after extra time.
The player doesn’t deserve any criticism for missing that chance, after all, he is a defender, it is his job to stop the opposition from finding the back of the net. Anytime that the former Tottenham man can score for the Hoops should only be considered as a bonus.
But footballers often have regrets, and perhaps that is one that Carter-Vickers has, but if that is the case if hasn’t affected his performances, as he has arguably been even better for the Hoops this season than he was last season.
Now the defender has a chance to make-up for that missed chance, as the Hoops’ next game is once more against Rangers at Hampden Park, in the League Cup Final.
Carter-Vickers’ most important role in the game will be defending, but you have to think that he might want to put right the wrongs of last season, and if he gets a chance, to find the back of the net.
Interestingly enough, the American international has yet to score his first goal of the season, and it would be the perfect time for the player to get his first goal in the final.
As has already been said, Carter-Vickers has no reason to feel annoyed about not finding the back of the net at Hampden Park last season, as he has been so good at centre-back for the Bhoys that missing one chance shouldn’t be that big of a deal.
But if the chance arrives for Carter-Vickers in the opposition penalty box, hopefully he takes it and who knows, perhaps it will be the goal that wins the cup.
