“Disaster” – “Cities would be under siege” – Wyness lumps Celtic fans in in with Ibrox fans in ignorant rant

It would appear all of a sudden that Football Insider is now the go-to site for headline making football news.

Now, before I go on, I need to make one thing clear.

If I’m looking for accurate and interesting football news, Football Insider would be the last site I would go to.

However, such is the extent of Scottish football journalism, Gavin Berry of the Daily Record clearly relies on such a respected site to get all his juicy stories.

Pulitzer prize journalism it is not.

Today’s story, in reality, is decades old.

And we all know it’s never going to happen, despite the desperation and wishes of certain people involved in the Glasgow duopoly over the years.

Now, whenever I do actually delve into the vapid world of Football Insider, I always tend to walk away shaking my head in disbelief.

Disbelief at the complete lack of effort that goes into their “exclusives”.

With sources like Frank McAvennie, who has about as much inside knowledge of Celtic’s machinations as that fox that ran onto the pitch against Rangers 1872 back in November 1996, you catch my drift?

Well, today’s story is no different.

Written by Wayne Veysey, and headlined like it’s some sort of exclusive, it opens like this:

Former Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness has insisted there is “no appetite in England” for Rangers and Celtic to join the Premier League.

Can someone tell me when, lately, either club decided to check if there was an “appetite”?

I think both clubs knew they were flogging a dead horse with this pursuit years ago.

But, as you know, it never fails to create a story whenever it’s brought up again.

It’s the well that everyone goes to whenever they’re hard up for a story.

You’ll note that the bloggers rarely write about it.

The reason I am today is not because it’s actually of any interest to me.

No, it’s more because I don’t like the tone of the language used by Keith Wyness in relation to our club.

While the article itself goes on to tell us that recent evidence has shown the clubs (us and them) would hold their own in England according to UEFA, it’s the last part of it that really rankles with me.

Before I get onto that, I just have one point to make, which kind of highlights the lack of attention Football Insider gives to detail.

Since when do they think that a club that has posted almost £120,000,000 in losses since it crawled out of the grave of it’s predecessor would hold it’s own according to UEFA?

I read the report from UEFA in the article.

All it shows is gate revenue for both Celtic, and the Ibrox club, amongst others.

And there’s no doubting it, both Glasgow clubs are right up there when it comes to gate revenues.

Just not when it comes to bank balances.

Which is something, if it ever came to pass, I’m sure the Premier League would look at very closely.

It’s the lack of this kind of critical information that tells you exactly why this story is just a horse that’s been continuously flogged to death.

It always creates headlines, despite in being a non-runner, a non-entity.

Which leads me to Keith Wyness, and what really pisses me off about this article.

But Wyness has poured cold water on the idea, telling Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “In my days at Aberdeen, I was fighting this battle.

We resigned from the Scottish Premier League, leaving R*****s and Celtic alone. We won that battle in terms of getting a fairer share of TV revenue.

The threat was for them to go to the Premier League, and they tried. They were looking for any other league in Europe to go to.

I think that has been dampened down in recent years, and if they were to try again – I just don’t see it happening at all.

As the rules stand right now, they won’t be doing it. I don’t think there’s any appetite at all in England.

Personally, I think it would be a disaster. People don’t realise the issues the fanbases would have coming down here. Cities would be under siege for weekend games.

So, how does he figure that?

Jesus, I wonder how the hell they manage to get games all around Scotland?

Do Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Dundee find themselves under siege whenever our fans travel there for a game?

Wyness makes it sound like England is a million miles away from Scotland.

But it’s the under siege part that really bothers me.

That, I know, is meant to be aimed at the Ibrox side.

Because we all know they have previous for that, Manchester 2008 being a case in point.

But as usual, we’re lumped in with them under the old “two sides of the same coin” adage.

Wyness neglects to remember that in recent years Celtic fans were named as the world’s best fans by FIFA.

So, if it ever came to pass that we headed down to England to play in the Premier League, I’m pretty sure most cities in England, would enjoy the presence, colour, and atmosphere the Celtic fans would bring.

Unlike our counterparts from across the city who, of course, earned the nickname the huns (now not a sectarian term) while they held Wolverhampton under siege back in the 60’s.

It would, of course, be a disaster if they descended on the likes of Manchester and Liverpool on a regular basis.

I guess if Keith Wyness wasn’t such an ignoramus, he’d know that too.

But lumping us in with them is just the easy way out.

The lazy way out.

But then again, what should I expect?
