A few years ago the SPFL’s top flight members voted to disband the Reserve League. This misguided decision has resulted in numerous players cast into the no-man’s land of no first team squad participation or ineligibility to play in the B Team.
The pathway for players into the first team is blocked, save for the small percentage who secure loan deals, or generational talents lucky enough and talented enough to make the leap (a la Kieran Tierney).
Bosun Lawal is deserving of a customary re-assessment during pre-season training. However Mikey Johnston despite his successful period at West Brom, suffered earlier in his career for the lack of proper reserve team football against other SPFL players and the physical demands of Scottish football.
The Quality Street Gang’s talents and game sharpness were honed in the Reserve League. Our current batch of B team players must participate, not in the 5th tier, but the Scottish Premiership’s Football Reserve League.
