Celtic’s grandstanding with Norwich backfires, as Idah ends up costing a lot more than anticipated…

Well, it looks like its finally happening, Adam Idah will officially be a Celtic player pretty soon.
This has been over two months in the making.
But there’s something very different about this transfer, and the way that it happened.
Now, if you’d told me Celtic would be happy to pay Norwich City £8.5 million for Adam Idah two months ago, I’d probably have collapsed laughing.
If you’d told me they were about to offer Norwich £6.5 million for Adam Idah two months ago, I’d have considered that to be a pretty sensible move.
Half a million over the reported asking price?
A bit of fat on top of what they valued him at?
Yes, I’d have been pretty sure that would have worked out nicely.
So how did we get to a point where Adam Idah cost us £8.5 million?
Well, I’ll take a stab at it, but what I’m about to say is purely conjecture, my opinion, based on what’s happened over the last two months.
Somewhere in there lies the truth, and I don’t imagine you’d need to be a genius to figure out what’s happened here.
So, there are four parties involved in all of this.
Firstly, there’s the two clubs, Celtic and Norwich City.
Secondly, there’s Adam Idah and his agent.
Its clear from the get go here that Adam Idah wanted this move, its also probable his agent advised him to push for it.
As a result, we saw certain signs at Norwich that this was the case.
Missed flights to training camps etc.
So there was never an issue on the player’s part.
Adam Idah wanted the move, and the fact that he wanted it so badly indicates that he must have been given some kind of assurance from Celtic that it would happen.
It would be naïve to think that he walked out the door and back to Norwich without some sort of parting conversation with Brendan Rodgers before he left.
It would also be naïve to think that Rodgers didn’t give him assurances that he would push for a move back to the club to happen.
So, let’s just say a conversation was had in good faith between both individuals.
Now, we know in modern football that good faith is a rare commodity, but in Idah’s case, he earned it.
He earned it because of what he contributed to Celtic’s double winning season.
And I would imagine before he left Celtic to return to Norwich, Brendan Rodgers was his main contact at the club.
It is important to note that the figure of £6 million in relation to the valuation Norwich placed on Idah, was most likely based on what they valued him at before he joined Celtic.
This figure was spoken about enough, so it wasn’t just plucked out of thin air.
Celtic did not secure a loan to buy option when Idah came in in January, so this plays an important part in where the club finds itself today.
Norwich then found themselves in a position where a player who had been underperforming at their club, overperformed at Celtic.
He overperformed, and played a pivotal role in Celtic’s title and cup winning season.
Scoring vital goals, and ultimately, increasing his value in Norwich City’s eyes.
All Norwich had to do was sit back and wait for Celtic to make contact with them once Idah had returned to the club.
I would imagine Norwich considered £6 million as a starting point.
Anything under that, well, I’m pretty sure they would have considered as derisory.
Cue Celtic’s first derisory offer of £4 million.
As I said earlier in the article, if Celtic had approached them with an offer of £6.5 million, which is not derisory, that would have garnered respect.
Norwich may have entered into earnest discussions then, and possibly worked their way towards agreement, with add ons.
Again, I stress that this is conjecture on my behalf.
But I think its fair to say that the offer of £4 million was met with the kind of response you’d expect.
I’ll hazard a guess that there was one of two responses.
Response number one, side splitting laughter.
Response number two, show some respect and come back to us again.
In all seriousness, I would say the latter was the kind of response Peter Lawwell was given.
Because to me, he is the only person who could be behind such a derisory offer.
This is the kind of grandstanding we’ve grown accustomed to over the years involving this individual.
How did anyone in their right mind even think that this was acceptable, or would be accepted by Norwich?
All respect in terms of early negotiations went out the window with that ridiculous offer.
But no doubt, a certain individual dug their heels in.
Hence the long dragged out process we’ve witnessed over the last two months.
However, Brendan Rodgers and Adam Idah also dug their heels in.
Rodgers told the board, in no uncertain terms, he wanted the player.
Idah told Norwich, in no uncertain terms, he wanted the move to Celtic.
It became a matter of principle to Brendan Rodgers.
Let’s state the obvious here, we could have gone in for Bojan Miovski, or Lawrence Shankland for a lot less than £8.5 million.
But we didn’t, and there’s a valid reason for this.
We didn’t because Brendan Rodgers made it clear, very early on, that Adam Idah was the striker he wanted.
And he clearly wasn’t backing down, or changing his stance on that.
But its also clear someone else didn’t want to back down after the derisory offer to Norwich of £4 million.
Or up the ante for that matter.
Hence the stalemate we’ve been witness to for over 2 months.
This was a battle of wits.
A battle that played out in an entirely different way five years ago.
But not this time.
In the midst of all this, Norwich waited, and also dug their heels in.
With the mindset that if you thought you’d get Adam Idah on the cheap, think again.
The price just went up.
And you brought that on yourself with your lack of respect.
We valued the player at £6 million before he went to you, he just helped you secure the title and the cup, and you think he’s gone down in value??
So, out of sheer stubbornness, Celtic, well, you know who at Celtic, sat on their derisory offer for almost two months.
Until the reality of the new season hit.
And the fact we only had one striker available to us.
And the fragility of that striker became more and more apparent.
I would hazard a guess that after the game at Hibs on Sunday, a few very direct and open conversations were had between Brendan Rodgers, Michael Nicholson, and Chris McKay.
It might have gone something like this:
I’ve made it clear since the 25th of May that Adam is my man, I’m not changing my stance on that, we need him now, in fact, I needed him two months ago.
Go back to Norwich, and find out what they’re willing to accept to fast track a move.
I didn’t mess up this move, you did, so fix it, and make it happen.
The time for dicking around with this is over, we have the money, get it done.
Then Nicholson and McKay went back to Norwich with their tails firmly between their legs.
Norwich now knew they had the upper hand in negotiations.
The mess created by the offer of £4 million had given them that power.
It was almost a case of name your price.
And clearly Norwich did exactly that.
The bottom line here is that if Adam Idah arrives for £8.5 million, we have overpaid for him by £2 million.
Finally, FINALLY, our grandstanding ways, and penny pinching ways have bitten us squarely in the ass.
But we’ve also learned something else here, Brendan Rodgers is calling the shots on player transfers.
Lawwell played chicken again with Rodgers, and this time he ended up firmly in the ditch.
We all know Rodgers has a serious ego, and there is no doubting it was dented in 2019.
Its pretty clear its not going to happen a second time.
The manager has forced the board’s hand, and they’ve now had to over pay for a player they could have picked up for £2 million less.
The sooner they now start taking the manager seriously, the better.
The next few transfers are going to be very interesting.
Because, while I think we’ve seriously overpaid for Idah, I also now think that Rodgers will get the players he requires before the window closes.
One man is getting serious about transfers, and it seems he’s now dragging the board kicking and screaming along with him.
This turn of events is very interesting.
It appears the old way of operating has really been shown up for the joke that it was.
Rodgers has now made sure of that.
He wanted Idah, and he was not going to allow a repeat of the John McGinn saga.
The board will probably try and spin all of this as a win for the club.
Saying that they’ve proved to everyone that they’re willing to spend money.
But we know that is clearly not the case.
The manager has informed the board its time to get real, and this represents a huge sea change at Celtic.
Maybe I underestimated Rodgers and his ability to stand up for what he wants?
By the time this window closes, I’ll know for sure if I was right or wrong.
The next 18 days are going to be very interesting.

We can’t expect top dollar for our players eg, O’Reilly and get players from the same league on the cheap. I think it was Roy Evans at Liverpool spent money on Collymore and said the money is just the business side to get him here. It what he does now that counts.

From day one, Adam Idah has always been the man on everyone’s lips! Always been the number one target! The same critics today were screaming from the rooftops about the amount of money we have in the bank! “So spend it” they scream! “Pay them what they’re asking for”. “We have the money” “”it’s no good sitting in the bank”.
These same fans watch us play hardball with clubs looking to buy Matt O’Riley on the cheap and applaud the club’s stance when we stick to our guns by holding out for the figure we think the player is worth!

Leigh, (Norwich fan) no disrespect, but you probably didn’t have the support staff around him. As for being “too easily knocked off the ball” you must be thinking about someone else! The SPFL is far more physical and there wasn’t a defender up here who could handle him, and I don’t think you had referred to European games, since you weren’t in any. His international performances proved otherwise also.
I do agree your club did good business with us here. But if they sold him to any English club, they would have received at least the same amount. So its only that the money is coming out of Scotland that is unusual.

Neely and Dunne were sacked by Rangers in the case of Paedophile FC TORBETT was sacked and then re – employed. Who does that if they’ve any decency. The answer is no one.
You stated that after he was sacked, Rangers reported him to the police, but they didn’t. They swept his actions under the rug. Dunn continued to abuse kids after. Rangers could have stopped that, but they chose not to. Why? Because the didn’t want to be guilty by association.

Rangers claim to have informed the police, however Neely’s accuser denies this. After he left Rangers in about 1990, he allegedly continued to abuse young players when offering one-to-one training and activity weekends in Dunkeld and Dalguise, Perthshire, for young footballers.
Rangers could have halted his abuse of kids, they didn’t.
As for Torbett, he was also a vile human being and I hope he’s rotting in hell. Either way, two wrongs don’t make a right, but you cannot claim innocence for your club. They knew what Neely was capable of, and they didn’t stop it. Simple as.

Interesting article. As a Norwich fan of over 50 years I’ve seen a lot of strikers. Some good, some not so.
I think the majority of Norwich fans had hoped Adam would do well for us. He certainly had the chance given to him but continually fell short. Hopefully it will come good for you.
Having said that for 8.5mill rising to 9.5mill I think I speak on behalf of The majority of Canaries in saying your board have well and truly had their pants pulled down.

I generally like your posts Eric but feel your off the mark with this one, as you stated this is your opinion and that’s fine but your opinion just seems like it’s an excuse to have a go at the board despite getting the signing done, I’m not expecting them to be applauded for completing the transfer as it’s the bare minimum required but I also very much doubt they have done nothing for 2 months either, transfers are difficult it looks more than anything that Norwich set a value and refused to budge rather than we were inactive, I said in here a few weeks ago we should judge the window when it closes and I am sticking with that, I can handle us overpaying for a player or 2 rather than doing nothing, the board aren’t great I think we all know that but if we look at last summer we had deals done early and the majority were a disaster, bringing in quality takes time, so lets trust the process and see how the next couple weeks play out, personally I think Rodgers will get backed with another couple signings to make it a good window overall when the dust settles.
