In 2016, when Dodgy Dave King came up with his #Going for 55 slogan at Ibrox, we all laughed.
A newly promoted team, which at the time was only four years old, and had won no titles, was telling the world they were going for their 55th title.
At the time, you could have said it was brazen, but in reality, it was idiotic behaviour.
Fast forward to today, and that idiotic behaviour in relation to “title number 55” has now morphed into a rod for the Ibrox side to beat themselves with.
Before the glib and shameless liar came up with his slogan, the number of titles won by either of the Glasgow sides, one of which is now deceased, never meant anything.
Obviously the old club that played out of Ibrox gloated about how much more titles they had than us, but the actual numbers meant very little.
55 meant nothing until Dave King gave it meaning.

I suppose while we laughed at it, it was the audacity of claiming that they were going for a 55th title when they were a new club that irked Celtic fans somewhat.
But as it is with everything they do at Ibrox, more often than not, it backfires spectacularly on them.
By next May, #Going for 55 is more than likely going to be a backfire of epic proportions.
While the likes of Jack Butland can cling fancifully to the notion that they’re still in this title race, while 11 points adrift of Celtic, most Ibrox fans are psychologically preparing themselves for the worst.
And believe me, this will be the worst season for them in their short and not so illustrious history.
All of the bullshit and lies will be put to bed.
There will be nothing more to gloat about.
No more most successful club in the world.
No more most successful club in Scotland.
And no more (bullshit) record for the biggest trophy haul in Scottish football.
Celtic can shut all of it down on the 15th of December, and then put the final nail in the of the Ibrox coffin next May.

For the record, and for all of you out there of an Ibrox persuasion, Celtic actually are the most successful club in Scottish football.
It is impossible for the Ibrox side to be level with us when they’ve only won three trophies in their short history.
Most sane people know this.
But it matters not a jot, by the end of this season, their fantastical beliefs will most likely be rendered meaningless.
If we win the the league cup in just over two week’s time, and then wrap up the title next May, the Ibrox side will officially become simply the second best.
Although I’m doing a disservice to Aberdeen, who throughout their illustrious history have won more titles and trophies than the current Ibrox entity.
In reality, it is they who are really the second best in Scottish football.

The media has decided that the number 55 is now something worth talking about.
Andy Newport of the Record has decided today, that it is now a number that fills them with dread.
I have to admit, the opening paragraph to the article did make me laugh:
The number 55 used to be looked upon with fondness around Ibrox. Not so much these days.
Mostly because it’s a bitter reminder of the colossal missed opportunity to reset Rangers as a competitive force after their 2021 league triumph. But increasingly, mere mention of those two digits is serving up another emotion – dread. They’ve tried not to think about it, to force it from their thoughts and into the darkest recesses of their minds. But try as they might, the Light Blue legions simply can’t ignore the reality it’s Celtic who are now the team going for 55, speeding towards equalling Gers’ cherished title benchmark at the end of this season.
It makes for good fiction, I must say.
A colossal missed opportunity in 2021?
We all know the Ibrox side were never going to assert any kind of dominance on Celtic.
That has been made clearly evident since then.
As for the cherished benchmark?
1 does not equal 55.
But we’ll play along for now.
Even if it’s just for the shits and giggles.
Because if 55 has now become a number to dread, what happens when 56 comes along for Celtic?

And then 57, and 58, and on, and on.
They created this nightmare for themselves.
If they hadn’t, nobody would care in the slightest about 55 or any other number for that matter.
Ibrox fans are now self-flagellating with the number 55.
I bet they love Dave King for that one.
Come next May, he’ll be my hero.
Mind the gap!
A long long time ago
I can still remember how the taxman made the Peepul cry
And I knew if he had the chance
Dave King would lead them on a dance
And maybe they’d be happy for a while
But dodgy Dave soon made them shiver
With every signing he delivered
Each dud brought tae Ibrox
Gave every Hun the dry boak
I can’t remember if they cried
When they found he’d took them for a ride
But something made me split my sides
The day their title hopes died.
I started singing
Bye bye ‘going for 55′
Drove the Sevvies to the bevvy
Falling for Davie’s lies
The Billy Boys were all pished and pie-eyed
Shouting this is still the same club that died
This is still the same club that died.
I met some Huns who had the blues
And asked them for some happy news
But they just scowled and turned away
So I went down to their megastore
Where I’d seen Huns gathering before
But the Huns there said this new squad couldn’t play
Inside Ibrox the roofs were leakin’
The stands were full of sad Huns greetin’
Not a word was spoken
But the lavvies all were broken
So I made the sign they hated most
Of Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Then just before my arse was toast
I kissed that cesspit goodbye
But I was singing…
Brilliant piece and a fantastic first comment in the style of American pie. Sitting here chuckling quietly at work. Thanks to both of you. 👏👏💚🍀
And Celtic’s 55 will be actually 55, not one title shared with another club. Unbroken history, yo ho ho and on we fucking go🍀🍀🤣
Outstanding R .St . Parsley, certainly made me smile , class in a glass .
R.St.Parsley (the author) passed away last year but I occasionally post some of his song lyrics on Celtic sites as he was a very funny guy.
Let’s get Rod Stewart in the studio to record this. It will be the holiday song of the year.
Keep Mariah Carey out of the number one christmas chart position.
A part of me couldn’t give a toss about the 55 thing. Then again another part of me wants to rub their noses in it when it eventually happens because I am pretty sure that if the situation was reversed, they would be letting us know all about it. People say don’t bring yourself down to their level, we are better than that but it will be interesting to see the reaction of Celtic fans when the big day arrives HH
