All Celtic fans would welcome Steven Gerrard back at Ibrox. Please, please, please bring him back!

In the aftermath of yesterday’s catastrophic 1-0 defeat at Ibrox to Queens Park, the inevitable talk of a Gerrard return is in full swing once again.

As things stand, Philippe Clement is still in the building, and it’s radio silence from Ibrox.

But it’s certainly not radio silence in the media.

First thing this morning, Mark Pirie was talking in the Record about an Ibrox return for Stevie G.

And believe you me, I and every other Celtic fan out there would give anything to see that spoofer back at Ibrox.

Needless to say the Ibrox fans adore him.

They adore him because he delivered their one and only title in their short existence.

The circumstances he delivered it in don’t matter to the Ibrox fans, they just want him back because he did it.

Now, anybody with a brain out there knows that Gerrard is, and was during his time at Ibrox, a cheque book manager.

In fact, a big part of the reason the Ibrox side find themselves in the mess they’re in right now, is down to his reckless spending in the run up to the Covid title.

But of course Ibrox fans don’t see that.

Or rather, they choose to completely ignore it.

I made the point last night on our podcast that Gerrard’s legacy from the 2020/21 season should be viewed as a failure.

A failure because he was incapable of delivering a treble in a season where Celtic were a non-entity.

Both James and I pointed out that it was a travesty that he won the manager of the year that season.

Especially when Callum Davidson won more trophies than him with his cup double.

And he did that with a fraction of the financial resources Steven Gerrard had.

I felt that yesterday must have been some measure of revenge for him, and I have no doubt he is still wondering why he did not with the manager of the year that season.

Fraser Clarke of the Record also said this morning that the Ibrox side’s defeat to the Spiders is the biggest ever Scottish football shock.

I alluded to our defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle this time 25 years ago in my article this morning.

Does it eclipse that?

It’s hard to know, because Scottish football was in a much different place 25 years ago in the year 2000.

It’s hard to believe that Rangers 1872 forked out £12 million that same year for Tore Andre Flo.

And we were paying ridiculous amounts of money for Scheidt.

However, what yesterday does do is put Gerrard firmly back on the Ibrox radar.

Personally, I think it’s wishful thinking on behalf of the klanbase.

Gerrard is not going to return to Glasgow, much and all as we Celtic fans wish he would, for the following reasons:

1. No transfer funds will be made available to him, and he’s the proverbial cheque book manager.
2. There is no way the Ibrox side could afford his salary, and we all know Gerrard is accustomed to a certain lifestyle.
3. He’s a chicken, he knows Brendan Rodgers would own him if he returned.
4. His previous legacy as the hero who stopped the !0IAR would be torn to shreds.

So the media can prattle on all they want about Gerrard, it ain’t going to happen.

Kevin Muscat, actor Mark Strong’s doppelganger, is probably the most realistic replacement out there.

Now plying his trade in the Chinese Super League, he could well be affordable to the Ibrox side.

Having managed in Japan prior to now, when he took over from Ange Postecoglou after he left for Celtic, Muscat would have contacts in both China and Japan, when it came to player trading.

The Ibrox side would be craving a manager who would be willing to shop in a much cheaper market.

Just as Ange Postecoglou did for Celtic.

So to me, he seems the most likely candidate if it all comes apart at the seams for Clement.

Despite the fact he has committed to Shanghai Port, according to the Record, the Ibrox side might just be able to cobble together a package for him.

He currently earns £1.6 million per year in China.

Not a huge managerial salary by today’s standards, but I guess when you’re skint, any amount of money to the Ibrox side seems huge.

Either way, there’s a much higher chance of Muscat coming to Ibrox than there is of Gerrard coming.

But it the Ibrox board are willing to pull out all the stops to get him back, I’m all on for it!

It would totally playing to the gallery.

Appeasing the klanbase.

Who, of course, are too thick to see what a disaster it would be.

What I’d give to hear his dulcet scouse tones around Ibrox once again.

And oh, how I’d enjoy watching Rodgers own him.

Ah well, a Celtic fan can dream…
