Kyogo Furuhashi’s decision to leave Celtic for Rennes seems to be turning into a nightmare…

They say the grass is always greener on the other side, but some players come to realise it will never be as green as it was at Celtic Park. For Kyogo Furuhashi, it seems as if his decision to swap Glasgow for Brittany is going down hill at a rapid rate.

Hoping to make an impression on his debut, Kyogo failed to score an opening goal at his new club.

Fans were underwhelmed with his debut against Strasbourg, where he managed just seven touches before being hooked in the 66th minute for 17 year old Mohamed Kader Meïté.

This set an unwanted record of the least amount of touches on a debut in 18 years in French football.

Not something I’m sure Kyogo wanted to be remembered for on his debut.

The Rennes fans referred to him as a ghost on his debut:

Kyogo is absolutely transparent. So this is his first match, far from me the idea of burying him, especially since I really think he is a good player, but his match was very bad.

But it would appear things are going from bad to worse for Kyogo Furuhashi.

With his Rennes side trailing fifth place Lille 2-0 at home, Kyogo came on in the 72nd minute to try and rescue the game for his team.

Rennes were down to ten men, so it was going to be a difficult enough task as it was.

Unfortunately for Kyogo, he limped off minutes later with a recurrence of the shoulder injury.

As luck goes, it couldn’t be any worse a beginning for Kyogo at his new club.

I honestly feel sorry for the guy, who gave so much to us as a player in his time at Celtic.

Whether he pushed for a move out of the club is irrelevant, he doesn’t deserve what has befallen him since his arrival at Rennes.

I just hope for his sake, he isn’t regretting it now.

Add to that the fact that his side are far from safe when it comes to relegation.

Rennes sit only three places above the relegation spots, with only 5 points separating them and 16th place St. Etienne.

There is no doubting they could sucked into a fight for their survival.

The end result would be a nightmare scenario for Kyogo.

His club have stated he will require surgery on his shoulder injury and they’ve given him the option to go through with it.

This will most likely keep him out for the remainder of the season as it is a four month recovery period.

If that happens, Kyogo could find himself returning to training to play in Ligue 2.

He stated that his motivation for the move was to put himself in contention for the World Cup with Japan.

Second tier football in France certainly won’t help him in that quest.

I guess he has two choices and two scenarios here.

Struggle on with his injury and hopefully score the goals that will help Rennes to secure their Ligue 1 status.

Or go for surgery, and possibly return to training with the club starting back in Ligue 2.

As stated before, they are by no means safe at the moment.

A continued run of poor results could spell disaster.

I guess Kyogo Furuhashi is finding out the hard way that the grass is not always greener on the other side.

I get the feeling he’ll be longing for Paradise soon enough.

It’s hard not to feel for the guy.

But I guess you live and die by the choices you make in life.

Kyogo is no different to anyone in that regard….
