Celtic bloggers are vindicated as the Fakeover begins to unravel. But two questions remain, is it really worth all this hassle and what, if any, is the endgame here?

Both The Celtic Blog and VideoCelts have published stories in relation to the likely collapse of the US Ibrox takeover this morning.

A story appeared late last night in the Daily Mail, and it confirms much of what we’ve already discussed in depth on the Trinity Tims podcast.

James has gone into great detail on it in his blog, and you can access that via the link provided.

Joe was very quick to point out how the BBC have predictably chosen to ignore the news on their website.

As a result, I felt I should do a piece on it as well, due to the fact we’ve all been following this pretty closely.

However, I’m going to posit some questions as to what the hell this is really all about.

To me, this whole venture seems like an awful lot of hassle for no real end result.

And by that, I mean if the Americans even managed to get to the fabled 51% shareholding, what then?

As James has pointed out on the podcast, in order to exert any kind of real control over the club, the Americans would really need a 75% stake in the club.

And even if they managed that, what then?

Because hypothetically, if they did, at that point they would’ve already had to sink a vast fortune into what is effectively a debt ridden club.

At what point, if ever, do the Americans start recoup any of that vast fortune?

It just doesn’t add up.

Clearly from what we’re hearing, the majority of the Ibrox directors are not happy with what they’ve been offered by the Americans.

So that begs the question, have the Americans lowballed them?

Have they offered them less money than their shares are worth?

There’s a hint of irony in that, because as we all know, many of the Ibrox directors have ploughed a lot of their own money into the club.

Out of an apparent love for the club.

I’m sure up until recently at least, considering the fact that club is so debt ridden, they expected get little or none of their money back at all.

Now that they are in a position to recoup some of their loss, maybe not all of it, and they choose to play hardball?

Beggars can’t be choosers and all that…

But you’ve got to ask, are the Americans trying to pull a fast one here?

You would have to think so, because to pay top dollar to buy out these directors just does not make good business sense.

Especially if they hope to make anything at all out of this acquisition.

So again, I ask the question; is it really worth all this hassle?

You’re talking an estimated £50 million, possibly more, for the Americans just hit the 51% mark.

Then you’re talking further tens of millions to hit the 75% mark.

This is before you even start to invest anything into the footballing operation.

Now, if Leeds United are anything to go by, these guys aren’t all that keen on investing vast fortunes into a club.

So why would they be considering plunging tens of millions into a basket case club?

Do they have a penchant for throwing money away?

Considering Leeds just posted their annual accounts recently, and posted a £76 million loss?

None of this makes any practical kind of business sense.

In the current climate in Scottish football, what could they possibly expect to make out of the Ibrox club?

I mean they know we’re the dominant club in the Scottish game.

As things currently stand, they cannot lay a glove on us financially.

Any person with any kind of business acumen knows that if Celtic really wanted to turn the afterburners on, we could leave them in the vapour.

So why the urge to plough money into a sunk cost fallacy like Ibrox?

Because it has been a sunk cost fallacy to all of the current directors, has it not?

They all want out now.

But since it looks like the Yanks are playing hardball, they’ve decided to play hardball back.

Now we seem to have a scenario where never the twain shall meet.

At least that seems to be where this is headed if the article in the Mail last night is anything to go by.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Americans even managed to push this through, what’s their endgame?

Because it seems like such a braindead endeavour under the circumstances.

They will not have the kind of revenue streams the likes of the EPL might afford them if Leeds make it to the promised land.

So where does their revenue come from?

The first order of business would be to catch Celtic, and that in itself would represent huge investment.

Which in turn would incur more loss.

Because that is all it has achieved to date.

That and the same amount of trophies St. Johnstone have managed to amass since 2012.

So, you see, as Joe said in our podcast, Andrew Cavenagh is a tyre kicker.

He’s kicked the tyres and looked under the hood, and he does not like what he’s found.

The story in the Mail last night is the beginning of the end of this fruitless endeavour.

Fruitless for both parties.

The Americans don’t like what they’ve found, and the Ibrox directors aren’t liking what they’ve been offered to sell up and go.

Nobody is going to win here.

It’s not worth the hassle, and there is no endgame.

It’s as you were.

Continue to die a death of a thousand cuts in a hopeless attempt to catch an ever elusive Celtic.

We know well enough that the only people who can hurt Celtic are inside Celtic Park already.

We’ve discussed it enough.

In reality, they’ll keep on doing what they do, and we’ll keep on doing what we do.

Scottish football will remain in a never ending cycle of eat, sleep and repeat.

The Ibrox fans were given a glimmer of hope after Keith Jackson’s ‘World Exclusive”.

They flocked to buy their season tickets with renewed vigour in the hope next season would be different.

Now all they’re left with is a field of broken dreams, and the dark shadow of Celtic Park engulfing them.

Death by a thousand cuts.

But which one will be the fatal cut?
