Talk of Kaspar Schmeichel leaving Celtic is a bit premature, but there is no harm in looking at another first team option

An article in the Record this morning states that Kaspar Schmeichel ‘may quit Celtic’ after his blunder in Saturday’s cup final.

This is according to none other than Gordon Strachan.

I believe Kaspar Schmeichel is made of tougher stuff than that.

One blunder does not a season define, I think it’s fair to say.

Schmeichel has contributed a hell of a lot to Celtic in his first season with the club.

But one thing that cannot be avoided is that he’s not getting any younger.

Was Saturday’s mistake down to the fact he’s losing his sharpness at 38, or was it just an isolated incident?

Considering how solid a season he had, I think he deserves the benefit on that one.

Granted, it may have come at the most inopportune of times, but nonetheless, it should not define his season overall.

While Gordon Strachan may have a bit of inside perspective when it comes to Schmeichel’s mindset, due to his son Gavin being on the Celtic coaching team, it may also just be his personal opinion.

I believe Kaspar Schmeichel will probably remain at Celtic for one more season.

His backup, Viljami Sinisalo, has more than shown he’s capable of stepping into the no. 1 role when the time comes.

And as we recently found out, Ross Doohan has returned to the club as a replacement for the outgoing Scott Bain.

So it’s as you were there.

However, it would be no harm for the club to start forward planning in this position, should Schmeichel’s time at the club be limited, considering his age.

What we don’t want is a scenario where he decides to call it a day, and our only remaining options are Viljmao Sinisalo and Ross Doohan.

I stated in a recent article that Celtic would do themselves no harm by pursuing Aberdeen’s Dimitar Mitov.

A couple of seasons ago, some of my mates laughed at me when I said that Mitov wouldn’t be a bad option for us.

At that time, he was playing for St. Johnstone, and he had just put in a fantastic performance against us, despite being on the losing side that day.

He more than proved on Saturday what he’s capable of, and it’s quite clear he’s one of the main reasons the Scottish Cup resides at Pittodrie, rather than Celtic Park.

I think we could pick him up for a reasonable price, and if Schmeichel did call it a day, it would be a straight shoot between Mitov and Sinisalo for the no. 1 berth.

I know our board has never been great for forward planning, but it appeared they did have some semblance of it in mind for the goalkeeping position last year when they brought in Schmeichel, and then Sinisalo as back up.

There would be no harm in forward planning once again for that position in the upcoming window.

Especially taking into account that Kaspar Schmeichel has a season, at most, left in him.

If he is more error prone next season, then it’s all the more important to have this in place.

Dimitar Mitov is a no brainer, and he isn’t going to break the bank.

It makes perfect sense.

But since when did perfect sense and the Celtic board go together?

We can but hope…
