If Jermaine Defoe is a “Legend” after winning one Covid title at Ibrox, what does that make Celtic’s Callum McGregor? Or any of the players who’ve won 4 in row?

This just in, if you’ve won one title at Ibrox, during a pandemic with no fans present, that bestows “legendary” status upon you.

Indeed, because you were part of the team that stopped Celtic from winning 10IAR, that also qualifies you for legendary status.

Well, if that’s the stuff legends are built on, what hope do we have at Celtic?

Because winning quadruples, 13 out of 14 titles and countless cups isn’t legendary.

That’s just run of the mill.

You know?

Expected, and boringly predicable, therefore nothing worth talking about.

But if you win one title, just one, at Ibrox?

That makes you a legend.

Its a lot to live up to in Scotland.

Winning everything and getting no credit for it, while if the Ibrox side bucks the trend, anyone involved gets legendary status.

But its only legendary in the eyes of one fanbase, and of course, their ever subservient media.

Today, one of their favourite SMSM fanboys, Scott McDermott has been waxing lyrical about former Ibrox “Legend”, Jermaine Defoe’s opinion on Russell Martin’s training methods.

In a gushing article in the Record this morning, he’s got an exclusive from the Ibrox “Legend”.

It starts with the following lines:

Steven Gerrard was that guy in 2021 when he delivered their 55th title a stopped Celtic getting 10-in-a-row.

What is it with this fixation on the number 55?

Why does it still matter?

Celtic won their 55th title during the season just gone, yet nobody mentions that?

Not that I give a damn, its only a number after all.

But I don’t get the fixation with it.

Celtic made it meaningless last season, yet they still cling to it as if its some sort of Holy Grail.

As for a manager getting it right at Ibrox?

Gerrard didn’t get it right, he was lucky, plain and simple.

Celtic imploded, and they took advantage of that, and of course the empty stadiums which applied no pressure to their players.

As well as the fact they were doped to their eyeballs on caffeine.

Gerrard’s record after that speaks for itself.

He couldn’t even cut it in Saudi Arabia, and now he’s jobless and living the high life in Bahrain.

So no, he didn’t get it right, a confluence of abnormal events afforded him a gilt edged opportunity to take advantage of a situation completely out of the ordinary.

Fair play to Defoe though, he said nothing in his career topped that league triumph in Govan.

I guess that’s because he never won a league title anywhere else?

But he won the English League Cup at Tottenham in 2008, so I guess, combined with his Ibrox title, that makes him a “Legend”?

Maybe Scott McDermott should talk to someone like Roy Keane when it comes to legendary status in England, and Scott Brown when it comes to that kind of status in Scotland?

And of course, Callum McGregor, who is also already well on his way to legendary status in the Scottish game.

Somehow, I get the feeling Scott McDermott doesn’t quite understand who you do or don’t bestow legendary status upon.

And Jermaine Defoe certainly does not fit that category.

Defoe is desperately trying to sell the “Legend” of Ibrox to Conor Coady as well, urging him to get himself to Glasgow to win trophies with a club that’s managed to win three trophies in 13 years.

Defoe also believes that Russell Martin can land the title in his first season at Ibrox.

His praise of Martin is gushing.

Defoe makes out that Steven Gerrard and Michael Beale were some kind of master tacticians during that season.

Once again, I’ll point to where both of them are in their managerial careers now….

Who am I to question him?

I can’t imagine what celebrating a title win in an empty stadium must have felt like.

It must have been exhilarating.

In 30 years time, people will remember them as the team who won 55.

It can never be taken away from them, he says.

Eh, it was last season when Celtic landed their 55th title.

I wonder how doolally we’ll all go if Celtic land 56 next season?

We won’t, we’ll celebrate it just like any other title win.

Because 56, and 55 for that matter, are only numbers, and that’s all they’ll ever be.

But hey, Jermaine Defoe is a “Legend” because he won one title in Scotland.

What makes you a legend is when you win a title with a number made significant by a glib and shameless liar.
