There are a lot of stupid stories about Celtic doing the rounds at the moment.
But none more so than a ridiculous story from Mark Pirie in the Record this morning.
Pirie has gone to the Talksport breakfast show, that bastion of expert sports journalism, for this steaming pile of horse shit.
Alan Brazil reckons that Dermot Desmond might be a bit phased by the £20 million investment the Americans have “plunged” into Ibrox.
So phased, that he could just write his own cheque of £20 million and hand it to Brendan Rodgers to do with what he wishes when it comes to player purchases.
Because to a billionaire like him with his Celtic plaything, that’s just petty cash.

I mean Jesus wept.
Have you ever heard such garbage in all your life?
This has to be read to be believed, but here’s some of what Brazil had to say:
Well, we know Mr Desmond at Celtic is very, very, very (wealthy). He could just write a cheque now. It’s petty cash for £20million if he wishes.
But he doesn’t do that. He makes Celtic generate its own money. If he has to, then he will.
There is absolutely zero logic in anything that Brazil says there.
Zero.
He makes his big statement about Dermot Desmond, and then completely contradicts it by saying Dermot Desmond makes Celtic generate it’s own money.
But then he says, “If he has to, then he will.”
What the hell does that mean?
Under what circumstances, if he has to, is Dermot Desmond going to write a cheque for £20 million for Celtic?
Taking into consideration that during his 30+ year affiliation with Celtic, he has never written a cheque like that?
Is Brazil saying that he’d do it just because he can?
Just because he’s a billionaire, and he wants to flex his financial muscle and show the new Ibrox owners that £20 million is petty cash to him?
Why would he have to?
Are Celtic suddenly going to go bust?
This whole story is just pure pie in the sky.
Brazil is living in cloud cuckoo land if he thinks Desmond would ever hand Celtic a £20 million cheque.
And Pirie then uses Alan Brazil’s statement as a platform to dive into a nonsensical story about Celtic’s interest in Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Which is then pushed by an even bigger Talksport airhead, Tony Cascarino.

I mean, I know the Record are desperate to produce transfer gossip, but this is scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Back here in the real world, there is no chance of Calvert-Lewin joining Celtic.
And there’s about as much chance of Dermot Desmond handing us a £20 million cheque as there is the Ibrox side admitting they’re a new club.
We’re all looking for scraps to write about at the moment.
But you’ve got to wonder where SMSM finds such garbage and then decides to run with it?
Have they no editorial standards whatsoever?
It’s almost as if these guys are just left to their own devices.
Because no sane editor would stand over garbage like that.
If there was an award for the worst Sports media in Europe, then the SMSM would win it, hands down.
They’re that bad…
To all the Board apologists out there – not only will Dermot not put the 20m in, he takes hundreds of thousands of pounds in cash out the club every year. And if your next question is ‘how so?’ Simple – he is the largest preference share holder which pay a fixed coupon of 6% on the principal amount invested. With all the cash laying about these should have been redeemed years ago, but, they weren’t and they hang round the club’s neck like a millstone 30 years after Fergus issued them…
Great comment Jamie. Dermot Desmond is the only Billionaire in the world to make money from ownership of a football club. It was such a sweetheart deal that was structured and executed by Peter Lawwell ( totally against the intentions of Fergus McCann who had decreed that Celtic would never again be owned by one person or a family!) PL set up a great deal for DD who has an exceptional ROI with, as you say, guaranteed dividends ad infinitum, shocking really
Good thought out comments. But why does Celtic support not see what a magnificent job the board have done ? Peter Lawell has made Celtic a stable club with cash reserves which many a business would envy. Of course we want more, but folk forget the money spent KEEPING players as well as trading. Celtic are a very successful business. Or do those detracters want us to be same as the car crash that was, is, the Rangers ? We have a fantastic team, a brilliant manager, and a board that has Celtic at there core.
You’re a Manto!
The board run a fantastic business model and that is where they should stay.
On a footballing side we should have a completely different younger, hungrier more dynamic team looking to move the club footballing side forward.
As mentioned before by your colleague over at the Celtic Blog Barcelona have a fantastic set up from their youths right up to the first team squad.
This is something Celtic should be copying.
@ Derek – because fans like me – along with tens of thousands of others – don’t think the board does a good job, on the contrary we think they are a group of lazy, greedy, myopic and reactive clowns.
