As we edge ever nearer to the big kick off for the domestic Scottish Premiership on August 3rd as Hoops fans welcome St Mirren to Parkhead for the first game of the new year, it is still pretty much all go when it comes to the transfer window and the speculation rumour mill.
Each new day seems to bring with it at least one new, or returning, player rumour that club manager Brendan Rodgers apparently has his eye on as he looks to rebuild the first team squad to again go for even more success in the coming year, and as we all know following on from our progress in last terms revamped Champions League campaign, our coffers have been significantly boosted as well for this summer.
For those fans who like a flutter, they will be hoping that boost translates across to our business in the window given the odds available for fans who punt on a move happening. The 24 year old versatile forward is a former Belgian youth international, and having joined the club from Standard Liege back in the summer of 2021, he has gone on to achieve quite a few successes for them, including helping them to the domestic double back in the 2022/23 campaign, and then scoring in their Belgian Super Cup win over Mechelen in July 2023. Their subsequent Champions League campaign not only gives him well over 100 starting appearances across his league career so far, he also has decent European experience, with a pretty decent goal return to boot.
It was claimed a good few weeks ago that talks had been progressing well for him and that a deal was ‘close’ but it seems that the media were quite wide of the mark here, as the players representative, Jibril Rekkab, has recently gone on record to say that although his client would be very interested in entertaining the idea of moving to us, no talks have yet taken place.
It is open for debate as to whether he means with the club itself, or directly with the player with permission being granted, but clearly, whatever the truth of our interest may be talks of any sort are no where near reaching a point of conclusion and for many it will leave them wondering as to whether or not Rodgers actually has any interest in him.
With Celtic being in a good financial position after our exploits and achievements last term, if he was on our shortlist you would think that we would be more actively chasing this one down as the player himself is now into the final 12 months of his contract before he becomes a free agent next summer, and with Antwerp’s own financial issues leaving sporting director Marc Overmars already admitting that they are looking at sales to ensure they do not lose anyone on a free, this would presumably be a deal that we could turn in our favour by just rolling the dice like you do on https://first.com/casino and their roulette wheel.
With Nicolas Kuhn having now already departed, I imagine we will see what the real truth is here quite quickly, but it does seem that he is not our preferred target despite all the rumours.
