The media totally underestimates the mobilisation of Celtic fans. A run of good results will not end this mobilisation

There seems to be a misconception in the media that if Celtic go on an extended run of good results, then all of this fan furore will die away.

That this will take the heat off the board.

Some are even saying that the late winner took a bit of the heat off the board last Sunday.

Think again.

Football results, and the issues the fanbase have with the Celtic board are now two completely separate things.

Lets get that much straight.

Brendan Rodgers’ media conference last Friday only served to strengthen the bond between the fanbase and the footballing operation.

The Celtic manager and his team have our full support.

This was made blatantly clear by the reaction when Kelechi Iheanacho tucked away our injury time penalty.

Before things had escalated to the level they have, the board would have taken full credit for that.

They would have considered themselves geniuses for signing Iheanacho on a free when we were raging they hadn’t bought a striker.

Just like they considered themselves geniuses for not replacing Kyogo, and Daizen Maeda ended up scoring 33 goals.

None of that will fly anymore.

There is no doubt the board are hoping that an extended run of wins will take the heat off them.

It always has in the past.

But if they think that, they clearly have no awareness whatsoever of what’s going on.

Although, judging by the look on their faces during the 12th minute at Rugby Park, you get the feeling they had some inclination.

That was only the beginning.

Every issue at Celtic, no matter how big or small, is now going to present itself as a crisis to the board.

This is simply because the fanbase is now fully tuned in to everything they do.

And we are not going to tune out.

The next hurdle the board is going to have to overcome is the release of the club’s latest financial results.

I already discussed that in my article yesterday, and I outlined exactly what should happen in conjunction with their release.

But we’ll deal with that when the time comes.

In the Record yesterday, Michael Gannon seems to think the Celtic fanbase don’t have what it takes to keep this up.

The naivety of this statement proves as much:

It’s extremely difficult mobilising a fan base of this size and the simple fact is most supporters are not that militant.

They might have a moan and a whinge but in general they just want to go to the games and watch their team playing football.

Has Gannon been paying attention at all?

Did he not notice that 400 fan groups, representing tens of thousands of Celtic supporters came together to discuss what needs to be done to force change at the club?

Or did he miss the fact that 40,000 fans responded to a questionnaire which asked all fans to deliver a vote of no confidence in the Celtic board?

Surely he didn’t miss all of that?

Somehow, I get the feeling the media think this is just going to go away.

I think they’ll realise soon enough that it’s only starting to gather momentum.

Last Sunday, which they tried to label as a damp squib, despite the fact 3,000 fans took part in the protest, was just the beginning.

This was organised the previous Wednesday, and at such short notice, it’s actually a credit to the organisers that it went off as well as it did.

But the media expected that in order for it to be a success, then the away end at Rugby Park should have been empty at kick off.

It was made clear that if people didn’t want to partake in the protest and support the team from the off, then that was entirely their decision.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, held that against them.

Which was highlighted by the way all of the fans mingled and came together as one after the 12th minute.

Gannon also seems to be under the impression that it’s hard for us to stay mad at the board all the time.

Especially if we keep getting results.

As I said earlier, the footballing operation is now entirely separate from the board in the eyes of the fans.

And believe me, it is very easy to stay mad at this board.

This is over ten years of corporate mismanagement which has come home to roost.

This has been a build up over a long period of time, and that just doesn’t go away.

But I’ve no doubt the media will come to realise that over the course of this season.

This movement is just going to grow and grow.

And the more the board dig in, the tougher we’ll make it for them.

This is not a case of if, but when.

There is no going back for them now.
