Kevin Doyle hasn’t got a clue whether the Celtic boss is “very close to the end” or not. He should keep his opinions to himself

Kevin Doyle? When do we ever hear Kevin Doyle giving opinions on Celtic, or the Celtic manager for that matter?

Yet there he was in yesterday’s Record, telling us that he thinks Brendan Rodgers is ‘very close to the end’.

Go figure.

Talk about stating the bloody obvious.

We’re all fully aware he’s close to the end of his three year contract, so technically, yes, he’s close to the end.

But that does not mean he isn’t going to sign a contract extension.

If fact, as we already know, Brendan Rodgers intimated that under the right circumstances, he’d be willing to consider a contract extension.

Based on what’s going on at the club at the moment, I get the feeling Rodgers is biding his time.

I think Rodgers is smart enough to know that things are going to have to change at the club.

It is three weeks on since “a board member” briefed against Rodgers in the Sun.

Rodgers asked for this to be investigated, but as yet, nothing else has arisen from the situation.

Now, we know the Celtic board operates at a snail’s pace when it’s to do with anything other than selling players, so this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Most people believe that if anything is going to come out of this, the earliest it will happen is probably at the AGM.

But in the meantime, it’s open season to speculate about Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic future.

Kevin Doyle was asked his opinion on Boylesports, and it’s clear he doesn’t know any more than the rest of us.

Everything he had to say was pure speculation:

At the moment, just listening to Brendan Rodgers in his press conferences and talking about summer signings, what he didn’t get, what he wanted, or reading between the lines, it doesn’t look particularly rosy there.

Going back two or three weeks and listening to him talk, it feels like it’s very close to the end. He’s not going to get the opportunity to improve much more there. If you don’t win the league and come second, you’re not good enough. It’s not like that in many places in the world. To win everything.

Nothing new or groundbreaking in there, is there?

Doyle is just stating the obvious.

Yet the Record felt what he had to say was the perfect opportunity to create a headline like this:

I’m confused?

Nobody in Ireland really gives a shit about the Ibrox side, other than to take sheer joy out of the predicament they find themselves in right now.

To me, that headline was designed to draw the reader in, and then results in telling the reader absolutely nothing they didn’t already know.

Because Kevin Doyle sure as hell doesn’t know any more than we do about Brendan Rodgers’ future at Celtic.

We all know that his time is coming to an end, unless he signs a contract extension.

But this is the thing with the Record.

They never tire of regurgitating the same stories over, and over again.

This morning, the Record is once again returning to the same old Steven Gerrard well.

Whenever the Ibrox side is in need of a new manager, we must always talk about Steven Gerrard.

Because he’s the messiah.

He won the Covid title, and that makes him the perfect candidate for the job.

He knows how to win the league in Scotland….

Correction, he knows how to win a league in empty stadiums, and with his players doped up to their eyeballs on caffeine.

But yeah, he’ll be the ideal candidate to turn things around at Ibrox.

He’ll tidy up the mess Russell Martin has created, no problem.

Imagine Stevie G trying to lift the Ibrox side off the foot of the table?

We know his management skills are limited, but starting from a position like that?

Well, let’s just say it will be pretty amusing if it comes to pass.

And there you have it.

Kevin Doyle has the inside track on Brendan Rodgers’ future, and Stevie G is coming back to Ibrox.

Just another day of pure speculation in the Record.

But I guess they won’t let up until they forced Russell Martin out, and get Stevie G back in.

Then all will be right in the world again.
