Celtic’s board members now have two choices; play their part in the the Desmond’s version of the movie Downfall, or get out with some dignity while they still have the chance

I had to laugh today when Keith Jackson, in his usual Monday morning piece, said that the club should erect a statue of Peter Lawwell outside Celtic Park to commemorate everything he’s achieved at the club.

I sincerely doubt that would ever happen, but if it did, I can’t imagine it would be a statue that Celtic fans would revere.

In fact, I’m pretty sure a lot of unsavoury graffiti would end up all over it, thus resulting in it having to be removed.

A waste of time, if you ask me, just like Lawwell’s contribution to Celtic at this current time.

Jackson was right about one thing in his article today though, Lawwell is surely intelligent enough to know that there is no way back from here.

When he called a halt to Friday’s AGM, and he and the other board members retreated and hid behind locked doors, they may as well have been entering something similar to the Fuhrerbunker back in April of 1945.

Because this is Celtic’s very own version of the movie Downfall.

On the face of it, it appears as if the board are going to stand by Desmond as he takes a flamethrower to all that is good at Celtic and torches everything around him.

Just like Hitler in Downfall, they probably know he’s lost it, but they’re too afraid to question his actions or his judgement.

These men aren’t stupid.

They didn’t get to where they are in life without a strong level of intelligence and common sense.

But somewhere along the line, they lost sight of why they were at Celtic and became consumed by what the club lavished upon them, rather than what they could do to make it better.

Put simply, greed has blinded them from their true path in life.

To put Celtic first.

It is patently clear by the state Celtic is now in that they are putting their own survival first, and the well being and betterment of the club is now secondary.

Because if they cared as much as they claim to care about Celtic, we wouldn’t be in the position we find ourselves in today.

As I stated before, I don’t think these men are stupid.

They must be smart enough to know that the writing is on the wall now.

They are well on course to becoming the most reviled board in the long and illustrious history of Glasgow Celtic.

The question they’ve got to ask themselves is this; is this really the legacy they want to leave behind them?

Because there’s still time for them to do the right thing.

And the right thing is not bullshitting the fans and telling them that they’ve learned from the mistakes they’ve made, when there is no evidence whatsoever of that.

It is too late for them to tell us that they’re suddenly going to fix everything now.

When they have been utterly incapable of fixing it up to this point.

They have only succeeded in making things far worse at the club over the last few months.

To that end, they have gone beyond the point of no return.

If, as Keith Jackson says, Peter Lawwell has realised that there’s no way back from this, then he can do the honourable thing.

He can bring his fellow board members into the Celtic boardroom and tell them he’s resigning, and that if they had any sense, they’d do the same thing.

Because they are now in the midst of Celtic’s version of Downfall.

Dermot Desmond is the ailing dictator, who still believes he’s capable of victory in all of this.

After Friday’s car crash of an AGM, they have lost the fanbase.

Effectively, the people are no longer on their side, save for a handful of diehards, who for some inexplicable reason still believe these men are capable of taking our club forward.

Each and every one of them has been compromised.

Any vestige of credibility they had was shredded in that AGM.

And if they can’t see that themselves now, there’s no hope for them.

The Celtic fanbase has zero respect for them now.

Added to that, we do not trust them to make the decisions that will take our club forward.

Especially considering how far backward it has gone under their stewardship.

In any relationship, when trust and respect are gone, there is no way back.

It is irrelevant whether they respect us any more, we know they don’t, this isn’t about them anymore.

Respect begets respect.

Trust begets trust.

They’ve made it clear they’ve no intention of respecting us after Friday.

But if they want to be remembered with respect rather than revulsion, they’ll do the decent thing and resign.

They’ll extract themselves from this cycle of destruction the Desmond’s have wrought on the club in the last couple of months.

Do that, and they’ll be remembered for having done the right thing.

It would also leave the Desmond’s standing alone.

And if Dermot Desmond is so hell bent on keeping our club in his iron grip, then he can pull his finger out and go about fixing it, rather than wrecking it.

He can put people in the boardroom who will take this club forward.

Because I’ve accepted at this point he’s never going to let it go.

Even when his day comes to leave this mortal coil, we now know who he is readying in his stead.

Although after Friday’s performance from Desmond Junior, I doubt any Celtic fan will ever respect him going forward.

In fact, it’s hard to see anyone ever respecting the Desmond’s from here on out.

They have no understanding of the average Celtic fan, nor would I ever imagine, they’d be bothered to.

We are minor irritations, to be swatted aside and ignored.

To be given labels like anti-establishment, bullies, irrational factions, and described as people who try to degrade the club.

The club has been degraded enough already by those who claim to be it’s custodians.

Across the city, Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell have paid with their jobs for the failures at Ibrox to date.

Their chairman has fronted up and spoken to their fanbase.

In doing so, he has explained the reasoning behind their decisions.

Celtic could take a leaf out of their book and communicate to the fans in the way Andrew Cavenagh has at Ibrox.

I never imagined I’d see the day where I would commend them for the way they treat their fans.

But in all honesty, it isn’t hard to.

After Friday, club communication at Celtic hit rock bottom.

If Peter Lawwell, Michael Nicholson and Chris McKay are the real Celtic fans they claim to be, they’ll disassociate themselves from the shitshow the club has become of late.

Ultimately, the choice is theirs.

Be remembered for all the right reasons, and for doing the right thing.

Or be reviled forever more for clinging onto the club in the interests of self-preservation.

Their individual legacies are now in their own hands.

In reality, there is really only one path available to them.

If they can’t see that, then they need to accept how they’re viewed historically in the future.

And I can assure them, they won’t be remembered fondly.
