Last night on the Trinity Tims podcast, we had a frank and open discussion about the Celtic board.
We highlighted their behaviour over the last few weeks since the title win on the last day of the season.
There was so much in there, if you were a neutral listening to a podcast about Celtic for the first time, you’d be in disbelief at the behaviour of the board.
During the course of the evening yesterday in the run up to the podcast, I got into a bit of an X spat with an account called @1888Seamus.
Seamus decided to have a go at me about my article yesterday afternoon.
The one in which I had the audacity to point the board’s behaviour when comes to their dealings in the transfer market.
Now, I’ve seen some defence of the Celtic board over the years, but nothing as staunch – yes I’m using the word staunch – and Waco cult-like as this.
Before I go any further, you’re better off seeing the post and thread for yourself.
I personally gave up arguing with the guy because there are some people who are just beyond redemption.
They cannot be reasoned with.

I actually feel sorry for Seamus.
Because he believes wholeheartedly that things will improve under this board.
Even though nothing had changed for 20+ years.
He displays blind loyalty to a regime that is ripping him – and all other Celtic fans out there – off, by ensuring they pay top dollar for a substandard product, and to watch a football squad that is totally under resourced and downsized season after season.
On the podcast last night, we talked about how Celtic fans have become ‘conditioned’ to accept mediocrity.
Seamus is your perfect Celtic specimen when it comes to said conditioning.
He believes that this board has delivered ‘unprecedented success’ and ‘unprecedented financial health’.
As if he was somehow benefitting from this ‘unprecedented financial health’.
It appears that he’s benefitting more from it than Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham are.
He defines ‘unprecedented success’ as winning a two horse race 14 out of 15 times against a parody of a football club that recycles managers on an eight monthly cycle for the last 14 years.
And then says that I am putting down Celtic by stating this fact.

Don’t get me wrong, as Joe said last night on the podcast, we all love winning at Ibrox.
We never tire of beating the Ibrox side time, and time again.
And we never will.
But let’s face facts here, it isn’t exactly difficult, is it?
And I’m not talking our club down by saying this.
With the weakest Celtic squad since the early 1990’s, we still managed to make a laughing stock of the Ibrox side throughout the season just finished.
The board continually downsizes the football squad because even they know how easy this is.
Or at least, how easy it should be.
Yet Seamus paints it as ‘unprecedented success’.
He is also adamant that the Celtic board has delivered this ‘unprecedented success’.
If you look at last season alone, you will know that Martin O’Neill won the double, despite the board’s best efforts to sabotage it.
They have continually weakened the manager’s hand, whether it be Ange Postecoglou, Brendan Rodgers, or Martin O’Neill, and expected them to do more with less.
Season, after season.
Our ‘unprecedented success’ is not down to the Celtic board.
It is down to the men who have won all of those titles despite the handicaps placed upon them by this board that Seamus shows unflinching loyalty towards.
Seamus also completely dismisses out of hand the lack of success on the stage where it matters most.
Europe.
The stage upon which a club like Celtic should be flourishing.
We should never, and I mean never, be measuring achievements against the tribute act as a barometer for success.
The real, and only barometer for success at Celtic lies in Europe.
I will see the Ibrox side as a worthy challenger when they really get their act together.
When they become a force to be reckoned with.
That won’t even be happening next season because they’ve just hired the biggest bottler in the Scottish game as their manager.
The man who will forever be remembered as the manager who Heartsed it in 2026.
I certainly will not be viewing him as a credible threat to our club.
However, if the board which has delivered ‘unprecedented success’ and ‘unprecedented financial success’ decides to further handicap Martin O’Neill by not supporting him in the transfer market?
Then the warnings that were prevalent last season will have gone completely un-heeded.
No lessons will have been learned by the board which consistently states it has learned lessons over the last couple of seasons.
They display no evidence of having learned anything thus far.
Especially when you look at their behaviour towards Martin O’Neill’s coaching team.
As Bhoycie pointed out on last night’s podcast, Wilfried Nancy was rewarded with a seven figure sum for almost destroying our season in six short weeks.
Yet the men who were pivotal in our success at the end of the campaign, and played a huge part in delivering the double, are being offered less money than they earned last season?
Mark Fotheringham and Shaun Maloney are being offered ‘take it or leave it’ deals, which are an insult to their achievements in the campaign just finished.
This is how we reward success?
We pay seven figure sums for mediocrity, but we feel it’s perfectly acceptable to screw the guys who delivered success for us?
This is the kind of behaviour that @1888Seamus defends vehemently, and believes contributes to ‘unprecedented success’ and ‘unprecedented financial success’?
Screwing the guys that delivered the success in order to deliver ‘unprecedented financial success’?
Get one thing straight Seamus, this board contributes nothing to the success of our footballing operation.
They continually asset strip the footballing operation, and stretch it to it’s limit, and in the case of last season, almost to breaking point.
They will sell our top assets this summer before they spend a penny.
Much of what is made on them will be banked to continue contributing to our ‘unprecedented financial success’ and to line the coffers of HMRC.
Martin will be lucky is he sees half of it.
But you keep defending this modus operandi Seamus.
Keep consoling yourself that something that has not improved in 20+ years will somehow improve this summer.
Depsite the fact that over the last few years it has gotten progressively worse.
You live in that fantasy land.
Enjoy your ‘unprecedented financial success’ and your ‘unprecedented success’ under this wonderful board.
I, on the other hand, will live in the real world.
I will measure success by regular Champions League participation and seeing domestic success as given.
With our level of resources, both should be perfectly and regularly achievable.
Strangely enough, this board struggles with that concept.
But you keep telling yourself that they’re the greatest.
You do you.
As long as you’re happy, thats all matters, isn’t it?
But for me, mediocrity just doesn’t cut it.
And it never will.

The board appear to have boxed themselves in by publicly declaring backing for MON and anticipating a busy few weeks.
So now we wait and see what happens……..
I suspect that many season tickets holders like myself have renewed hoping that the board have seen the light.
If they now fuck us over this will come down on them like a ton of bricks and there really will be no place to hide.
However it is way to early to kick off about this yet.

I was going to say you have been gaslighted Eric but unfortunately on reflection I think not. I was out watching the game on Sunday morning and one of the guys was so excited because he had never seen Scotland in a world cup before. Firstly, I wanted to punch him for reminding me how old I am becoming but it also reminded me of a generation gap that in regards to celtic it depends on who is teaching you the history. Maybe Seamus is spawned from one of the boo bhoys when the bunnet that will be Fergus McCann to the younger generation successfully saved our club from the Kelly’s, Whites and McGinns. Unfortunately, this generation only know the winning side of celtic for us we have the memories of being nearly bust and wiped out completely. Do you think for a second we’d have been allowed to start again at the bottom of any division. NO. These people like Seamus are blinkered because the history to them is winning so what the fuck is our problem. The pitch invasion for selfies is a mark of this generation not because the euphoria got to them. The clicks on there pages meant more to them. It’s actually scary that we are now seeing an entitled belief amongst our own support that they resonate with the peepul living in Castle greyskull. It’s really all about the history of our club which you either know what it means or you prefer to ignore as long as it benefits your profile.
On another note on the amazing tartan army. You can take them out of Scotland but you cannot take out the sectarian bile of hatred.

Hi Eric totally agree with this article but although I’m unsure if you have a season ticket, I’m fairly sure James and Joe would have renewed theirs so in my eyes they are a big part of the problem. Keep giving them your money and the board will keep doing what they do, round and round the merrygoround. Like politics keep voting for clowns and you’ll get a circus
