If Gvidas Gineitis’s agent has accurately described Celtic’s handling of this transfer, then the people responsible should be embarrassed.
This is not another supporter guessing what happened behind closed doors.
Dmitry Vinokurov was directly involved in the negotiations.
There was even a video call with the coaches, who were described as extremely positive about bringing the Torino midfielder to Glasgow.
Yet Celtic never submitted the final offer.
That is staggering.
Celtic Gineitis Failure Raises Serious Board Questions
Vinokurov says Torino were prepared to discuss a deal.
He also believes the fundamental problem was that not everybody within Celtic’s hierarchy was as convinced about the transfer as the football staff.
That should infuriate supporters.
Martin O’Neill is employed to build a team capable of winning football matches.
If his football operation identifies a player it strongly believes will improve Celtic, those controlling the finances should have an extremely convincing reason for preventing the deal.
Instead, Celtic waited.
According to the agent, they waited for Arne Engels to be sold.
They also waited to discover whether Champions League qualification would deliver more money.
Then Celtic collapsed against LASK and Gineitis never arrived.
Celtic Board Cannot Keep Operating Like This
This is precisely the kind of backwards transfer strategy supporters have criticised for years.
Celtic’s last published accounts showed £77.3million sitting in cash.
Engels was then sold for a huge fee.
Yet Celtic apparently still needed another sale and Champions League income before committing to a player their football staff wanted.
What exactly is the point of financial strength if it cannot be used to strengthen the football team before the matches which generate the biggest rewards?
Michael Nicholson is chief executive. Chris McKay is responsible for Celtic’s finances. Ultimately, senior executives must answer for how the club’s transfer strategy operates.
This is not about demanding reckless spending.
It is about competent planning.
The most damning part of Vinokurov’s interview may be his claim that O’Neill was frustrated after Austria and believed Gineitis and another target could have helped Celtic reach the Champions League.
If accurate, that is devastating.
Celtic apparently had the manager’s preferred reinforcement available, a selling club willing to negotiate and substantial financial resources.
And still they waited.
That is not prudence.
It looks like paralysis.
And supporters are entitled to demand far better from those entrusted with running Celtic.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Gineitis’s agent says Celtic’s coaching and sporting staff genuinely wanted the midfielder.
- Torino were reportedly willing to negotiate.
- Celtic never submitted the final offer.
- The agent says Celtic waited on the Engels sale and Champions League qualification.
- Celtic’s latest audited cash balance was £77.3million.
- Senior Celtic executives now have serious questions to answer about how the deal was handled.
If what Vinukorov says is true, and who are we to doubt him given this boards previous behaviour, we will never see Gineitis in the Hoops as long as Nicholson and McKay are part of the board. There’s no way they accept being shown up like this.
Hey nothing new that’s just confirmed what we already know. The Celtic board are totally out there depths. We need a new young forward thinking board totally committed to our team.
The Celtic support need a vision new or up graded stadium with an 80 to 85000 capacity, facilities for big function concerts maybe even different sports being played off season to bring in extra revenue. The problem we have is the Celtic board still think you rock up to the Bank of Scotland for a loan, things have moved on there are multiple ways to finance business. Take a look into the ways Spurs new ground was financed its fascinating.
As for our transfer window total embaressment, and the biggest worry for me is that board ain’t moving to soon and DD wont sell, we could be a massive club.
We are all fully aware of the tardiness and parsimony associated with these charlatans.
Even although it is no surprise to read or hear of this, it is just another of their embarrassing unprofessionalism and undermining of those who matter most to the success of this club…ie the manager, coaching staff and players!!!!
Shame on them all and until they are removed or walk away there won’t be any change in policy or attitude !!!
Excuse my language, but I’m fucking sick to death of these grey-suited buffoons in our boardroom. I’m almost convinced they literally hate our fans. I’d forego every competition this season in exchange for getting them to fuck outa there.
Same old biscuit tin mentality , will never change until they get rid of the board especially nicholson
What a bunch of amateurs, embarrassing
They are a shower of incompetent arrogant imbeciles who will never change.
They have been found out for the last 20 years.
The domestic success has been achieved despite them not because of them. We have had nothing to beat.
The European humiliations are down to them.
