If you thought Celtic were going to sit back and admire their work after the 3-0 win over LASK, think again.
The transfer rumour mill is absolutely flying right now, and the most encouraging part is that Celtic appear to recognise the squad still needs significant work before the window closes.
Reports suggest Martin O’Neill wants at least four further additions, with goalkeeper, full-back and midfield all areas being looked at.
The man means business.
The name closest to the front of the queue appears to be Ermin Mahmić. Celtic are chasing the Slovan Liberec midfielder, with a fee around £7million being reported.
I like the ambition there.
Celtic have made serious money from Arne Engels and Paulo Bernardo this summer. Mika Baur has arrived and looked extremely tidy against LASK, but that shouldn’t mean the midfield rebuild is finished.
Gvidas Gineitis remains another name refusing to disappear.
The Torino midfielder has been linked throughout the window and, if Celtic remain genuinely interested, I’d be delighted to see them continue shopping in that sort of market.
Then there’s Niko Sigur, perhaps the most intriguing name of the lot.
I’ve already said I like this potential signing. Sigur’s ability to operate in midfield and at right-back makes him particularly attractive now, with Alistair Johnston facing an extended spell on the sidelines.
Yuki Sugawara has also been mentioned as Celtic explore their right-back options.
The only frustration with Sigur is timing.
A player capable of providing midfield legs while covering Johnston would have been incredibly useful to have through the door before the Champions League qualifier. Nevertheless, he’d still be an excellent addition for the season ahead.
At left-back, Landon Emenalo continues to look like one to watch. Celtic are reportedly closing in on the Chelsea youngster on loan, although a minor injury has complicated proceedings slightly.
And don’t forget the goalkeeper situation.
Balázs Tóth remains a live target as Celtic seek genuine competition for Viljami Sinisalo. That’s exactly how I’d approach it. Don’t promise anybody the jersey. Bring in another goalkeeper who believes he can become number one and let the two of them battle it out.
Other names including Miguel Chaiwa and Farès Ghedjemis continue to float around the rumour mill, although I’d currently put them a rung below the main targets.
What I like most, though, is the bigger picture.
Høgh. Durán. Hassan. Baur. Potentially Mahmić, Sigur, Emenalo and another goalkeeper.
Suddenly you’re talking about serious squad evolution rather than another summer of tinkering around the edges.
Celtic have one foot in the Champions League after Wednesday night.
Now is absolutely not the time to take our foot off the accelerator.
